James Tait and the Politics of Indigenous Resistance in early 20th C.BC with Wendy Wickwire, historian The Victoria Historical Society presents “James Tait and the Politics of Indigenous Resistance in early 20th C.BC” with Wendy Wickwire on Thursday, January 23, 2020 at James Bay New Horizons, 234 Menzies Street, Victoria V8V 2G7. From his base at Spences Bridge, James Teit (1864-1922), an immigrant from the Shetland Islands and a prolific ethnographer, spent four decades tirelessly helping BC’s Indigenous people challenge the settler-colonial assault on their lives and lands. This talk highlights his remarkable anthropological and political activist legacy. Wendy Wickwire is professor emeritus, Department of History, University of Victoria. Among her publications on BC history is a new book, AT THE BRIDGE: JAMES TEIT AND AN ANTHROPOLOGY OF BELONGING (UBC Press). Doors open at 7:15 pm for refreshments and conversation. Michael Layland will introduce his third book delving into the progression of European knowledge of Vancouver Island. The book celebrates how the diverse local flora and fauna captured the interest of naturalists among the explorers, settlers, and visitors. A life-long amateur naturalist, Michael has combined this interest with his history of exploration and cartography of our island. Michael, a former president of the society, has presented several talks to the VHS. Copies of his books will be available for sale and signing.

The new art show will feature a cross-section of maritime artwork from the Museum’s extensive art collection of over 500 works. David Leverton, Executive Director of the Maritime Museum stated that: ”We’re honoured that The Honourable Janet Austin, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia is hosting the art show at Government House. The Lieutenant Governor is the Honorary Patron of the Maritime Museum of British Columbia which makes this very special for the museum and our members.” The art show highlights paintings of life along our coast over the past several hundred years. There are paintings by artist E.M Chadwick that depict early European discovery; artwork about the days of whaling featuring artist Harry Heine; rescues off our west coast such as the freighter Makedonia under-tow byHMCS Sudbury and the rescue of the S.S. Glafkos in Barkley Sound by Edward Goodall; paintings depicting the important role ferries play along our coast by Ivah Bryant and A. Frank; artwork representing the protection of our coastline by the Royal Canadian Navy such as the painting HMCS Provider completed by artist John M. Mulders; and Coast Guard protection of our coastline in a featured work entitled CCGS Ready by artist Hugh Mackenzie. The art show also includes special paintings of the three prized ships in the Maritime Museum’s artefact collection including the SV Tilikum depicted in a series of watercolours by artist R.W. This art show highlights life along our coast over the past few hundred years. In the future, the Maritime Museum would be honoured to collaborate with West Coast First Nations on a maritime art show that highlights the important relationship between First Nations’ and the coastal environment. The Executive Director stated that, “First Nations have inhabited our coastline for thousands of years and it would be a privilege to work in partnership on the development of a First Nations’ art show that spans the last several thousand years. The art show will open on November 8th with a private reception and will be available for public viewing during regular opening hours at Government House until the fall of 2020.

    Spend the Day at the Canadian College of Performing Arts November 22nd / 9am to 4:30pm 1701 Elgin Road Ever thought about being an actor, dancer or singer? How about all three? Join us on November 22nd for a glimpse of what it takes at one of the country's top performing arts training centers! Open to all high school students (*priority will be given to students in grades 11 and 12) this is an opportunity to observe and participate in college-level dance, voice and acting classes, talk to current students, faculty, and the college directors. The day will include a dance class, so we ask that students dress prepared for movement and bring a water bottle and a snack. Lunch will be provided. As space is limited, we take an RSVP list through the fall and are able to confirm participation approximately 2 weeks prior to the event – preference is given to students in grades 11 and 12.
