    Focus on Four

    Focus on Four New works from four gallery artists, Terry Fenton, Greg Murdock, Brad Pasutti, and Jason Stovall February 6 - 27, 2020, at Winchester Galleries Opening reception: Saturday, February 8, 2:00 - 4:00 pm. Artists will be in attendance. Winchester Galleries is pleased to announce the new group exhibition of four Canadian artists: Terry Fenton, Greg Murdock, Brad Pasutti, and Jason Stovall. In this exhibition, a collection of new artworks from these four artists have been selected to present a variety of artistic representations. From realistic landscape to figurative narrations and abstract. TERRY FENTON a gallery director, author, workshop organizer, arts advocate... during a half-century of contribution to the arts he has always made the art of his own. Although recognized as a champion of Canadian and international abstraction, Fenton himself has devotedly painted from nature: mountains and foothills during a long sojourn in Alberta, and prairies reflecting his upbringing in Regina and more recent residence in Saskatoon. During the past decade he often painted seascapes from winter visits to the West Coast, but that practice has intensified since he and his wife moved to Victoria. GREGORY MURDOCK was born in 1954 in Saskatoon. He credits a trip to Europe following high school for kindling his passion to become an artist. When he returned from Europe, he enrolled in the faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Saskatchewan. studying ceramics, sculpture, and drawing. He then travelled to Mexico to study bronze at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel Allende. In 1979 he moved to Vancouver to study at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design. There, he expanded his architectural vision and imagery, created installations and discovered the potential of “spackle” as a medium and surface to explore in both his two- and three-dimensional works. He is known for his fresco-like mixed-media works that elegantly explore surface, space and form with references to both external and internal worlds. BRAD PASUTTI was born in 1957, Trail, British Columbia. On completion of a diploma in sculpture from the Kootenay School of Art in Nelson and a BFA from the University of Victoria, Pasutti launched his artistic career in 1984 with an exhibition at Victoria's Open Space Gallery. He has continued to show his work at commercial and public galleries including at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and Surrey Art Gallery. Pasutti's recent work suggests a sense of unfolding narrative structure. There is no clear set story being told, rather the work is open to narrative possibilities. Characters and possible situations, including the internal mental states of the characters, carry over from one piece into another, so that the series of larger works become interconnected like chapters in a non-linear narrative or are alternative parallel narratives. JASON STOVALL was born in 1989 in Edmonton, Alberta, but raised in Fort McMurray. The mixed suburban and industrial setting of Fort McMurray is a starting point for Stovall's work. Stovall’s upbringing, heavily influenced by the conservative and religious values of Alberta, and by the transient workforce constantly coming and going from the oil sands, combines to form a basis of subject matter for his work. https://www.winchestergalleriesltd.com

    Nicholas BottMadrona Gallery November 16–30This solo exhibition will feature 20 new pieces showcasing Nicholas Bott’s dramatic take on west coast landscape. Bott studied art at UBC and holds a diploma from the Chicago School of Art. Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh and the Canadian Group of Seven, his paintings have evolved continuously into the post-impressionistic style of his current work. Bott distills landscape elements of the west coast and Rocky Mountains into powerful aesthetic compositions to communicate a sense of the sublime.     Bi yuan cheng: Ethereal VisionsNovember 14-24 The Avenue GalleryBi Yuan Cheng has practiced art from age five and was mentored by one of China’s most prestigious art professors. In 1983, Bi graduated magna cum laude from ZiangXi Art University. Many of his works are on display at the University Art Museum and his sculptures stand in China’s parks and facilities. In 1987, Bi’s distinguished career was recognized with the title of “Chinese Art Master.” Bi immigrated to BC in 1990 where he continues his masterful career in oil and acrylic painting.     MILES LOWRY LETTERS FROM THE TREES October 1 - 13th, 2019 Opening Reception: Thursday Oct 3 @ 7-9pm Fortune Gallery www.mileslowry.ca www.loveandliberty.ca In its earliest manifestation the Irish Ogham script can be found carved into ancient stone markers in the Irish countryside. It has since been lost, found, saved from obscurity and disputed for centuries. According to the medieval scribes who recorded it, the letters played an important role in the Bardic mystical tradition of honouring sacred trees and plants. The fusion of mark-making and language is at the centre of Lowry’s approach as he merges modern pigments, paper, wax and wood with his own inks (by boiling oak galls or acorns) based on medieval recipes. As such, trees are sometimes both the substance and the subject of the works. In this exhibition Lowry explores Ogham, its symbolism and how trees can portray abstract expressions, reflect hidden communications and inspire spiritual investigations.     Kimberly Kiel: Mark Making The Avenue Gallery, September 19–29 KimberlyKielexpresses herself through a wide variety of subject matter: landscapes andtreescapes; figure pieces andflorals. She loves the creaminess of oil, the opportunity to blend, the fact that it doesn’t dry too quickly. Looking at her work, it’s obvious that colour is a major source of inspiration.     We Carry Our Ancestors: Cedar, Baskets and Our Relationships with the Land Legacy Downtown: September 28–December 21 This exhibition weaves together generations of Indigenous women through cedar basketry. For the first time ever, Legacy Art Galleries will exhibit Nuu-chah-nulth and Salish historical baskets from the collection, alongside portraits of theweavers including Alice Paul, Rosie Ross, Mary Jane Jackson, Mathilda Jim, Julianna Williams, Liz Happynook, Lena Jumbo and Ellen Jumbo. The photographic portraits are bydocumentary photographer Ulli Steltzer from Germany, who lived in Vancouver from 1972 until her death in 2018 at age 94. She used an unobtrusive hand-held Rolleiflexcamera while photographing many First Nationsartists at their work inBC. Contemporary baskets by Salish artists Angela Marston and Brenda Crabtree, among others, will also be exhibited. Through new and intensive community research, this exhibition honours the resilience of women who have carried their cultures forward by passing down the art of cedar basketry to future generations.     Megan Dietrich: Analog Us Madrona Gallery: October 11–October 25 Megan Dietrich is a Vancouver-based artist whose expressive paintings examine relationships of line, colour, and texture through influences of modern art history, pop culture, and personal experiences of life on the West Coast. Megan grew up in Powell River, and much of her painting and material language comes from that experience—surrounded by community, nature and a multitude of rich organic elements. There is always a fluidity to her work; room for mixture, variation and expression. She uses acrylic paint, pencil, ink, charcoal and other media to produce emotional and introspective mark-making that carries the eye. After a brief stint in studio art training, Megan finished her degree at the University of Victoria in 2012 and worked in a number of creative industries including film/television, art education and graphic design. This will be her first solo exhibition with Madrona Gallery and will feature over 20 new works. Analog Us is an attempt to be fully human, focusing on colour, sensory texture, and composition. In painting history these ‘objects’ are traditionally called models. In this show, these models have transformed, shedding this label and many of its objective associations.
