Lisa Samphire’s Carnival Series is the celebration and culmination of 35 years of training and working with handblown glass. Working in a series allows Lisa to play with form, colour and pattern using a labour intensive process. She loves how the linear pattern informs the shape of the pieces and defines its limits. Balancing process with the aesthetics of the final piece has resulted in bright, cheery and complex works of art. As a resident of the Okanagan Valley, Marianne drew inspiration this winter from the dark blues and blacks of the frozen lake. As the temperature warmed, interesting-shaped cracks appeared in the ice. She has captured this in richly layered works of art that show light and shadow in their depths. Gordon Scott's early experimentation in a range of mediums – watercolour, charcoal and photography has led to his back-painted acrylic and ink on glass technique. He feels the use of glass panels combined with vivid colours has allowed him to fully express himself and create unique contemporary art. Gordon's panels that hang on the wall are equally as stunning as his tables. We are thrilled to welcome the lively paintings of BC artist Claire Huang to The Avenue Gallery! Describing her art as "a tribute to the places that evoke a moment of contemplation," Claire Huang enjoys spaces that have mystery and atmosphere. She explores the duality of a conscious world filtered through ambiguity and clarity. Influenced by her early background in architectural design, Claire often turns to architecture as the inspiration for her work. Shinah begins her work on the floor, using the happy accidents of pigments as a backdrop. She then rotates her canvas on the wall until she is satisfied with its composition and vitality. As a final touch, she adds colours in very fast and instinctive gestures. Shinah’s paintings are inspired by images and vibrations she perceives in her surroundings. Not just a flower but a spontaneous emotion by which the artist shares her feelings about love and life. "For me creating art is a passion. A celebration of the joy and colour to be found in life. I paint as an expression of joy and energy. It is pure delight to squeeze out huge piles of oil paint, squish it around, have it blend, meld, combine. Wet paint, layer upon layer, morphing into a tangible and interesting surface. I strive to leave much to the imagination, for the viewer to fill in the blanks. To go from a blank, white canvas to one filled with brilliant, glorious colour - there is a huge sense of satisfaction in that." – Kimberly Kiel The Avenue Gallery 2184 Oak Bay Avenue Monday - Saturday: 10am - 5pm, Sunday 11am - 4:30pm See more at www.theavenuegallery.com

Throughout his years making unique woodworks, Laurie has discovered a passion for the dynamic differences in colour, contrast, grain and spalting. It can take a long time to best understand how to turn a rough piece of wood into a form that best highlights its colour and shape. Laurie tries to feature the natural aspects of live edge, knots and bark in all his sculptural vessels. By fusing traditional Japanese techniques with modern Canadian inspiration, Minori Takagi has developed a new style of wearable art. Her translucent glass chains are formed by linking handcrafted glass circles into one another, fashioning pieces that seem delicate but are actually resilient — solid loops that gleam radiant in the light. "With these forms, my glass art reminds me of the magic I used to watch my grandmother work—from raw substance emerges a new, poetic creation." Minori's glass jewellery is widely acclaimed. It won Vancouver Magazine’s 2019 “Made in Vancouver” Style category, and has been featured in The Georgia Straight, the Canadian craft magazine Studio Magazine, and the book 1000 Beads by Lark Crafts. Minori lives and works in Vancouver, BC. The Avenue Gallery 2184 Oak Bay Avenue Monday - Saturday: 10am - 5pm, Sunday 11am - 4:30pm See more at www.theavenuegallery.com

Mary-Jean’s new oil paintings reflect the rugged landscape of British Columbia’s coastline. Her education in both fine art and graphic design play a strong role in the stylization of her work. "The focus of my work is the exploration of looking inward when interpreting the landscape, the opposition of different forms, lines and colour to intensify each element’s dynamic properties. The study of contrasts between massive trunks and juxtaposing the most delicate of foliage, the blackness of a heavy-handed shadow intensified by playful strokes of light." – Mary-Jean Butler The Avenue Gallery 2184 Oak Bay Avenue Monday - Saturday: 10am - 5pm, Sunday 11am - 4:30pm See more at www.theavenuegallery.com

A senior signature member of The Federation of Canadian Artists, Lorna Dockstader’s simplified style invokes the themes of purity and solitude. “Certain places have the ability to increase our sense of peacefulness, in an unpredictable world.” She believes that subtracting non-essentials, as well as the use of elegant colours, and neutrals, achieves her desired result. Geoff Searle adds his own artistic flair to the centuries-old art of Raku ceramics. Pots that are almost dry are polished to a mirror-like finish using the back of a silver spoon. This process is repeated twice more before being fired. Once cooled the pot is wrapped in an assortment of organic materials and metallic salts which are fumed during a second firing. All pieces are fired in the same way, yet they each take on a different appearance, creating unique, complex and exciting works of art. Angela and Ryan Rosenberg have been creating jewellery together since 2007. Moving to Creston, B.C. their Silversmithing studio was born in their hillside house, across from vineyards and orchards. Inspired by the mountain vistas and rocky shores of the valley’s lakes, their jewellery designs flourished. Thirteen years later, their Silversmithing has evolved and transformed, almost instinctively with the changing of the seasons.
