"Recent hikes through a forest reminded me of time spent walking through the Douglas firs in Cathedral Grove. I loved the way the light filtered through their tops, and behind their trunks and branches. The branches created a dark tracery around the shades of light, creating the impression of stained glass. This is how it felt inside a west coast forest." Lorna Dockstader The Avenue Gallery 2184 Oak Bay Avenue Monday - Saturday: 10am - 5pm, Sunday 12 - 4pm

Geoff Searle has been a potter and artist since 1972. Pit-fired sculpture and raku are produced at his studio in rural Fraser Valley, BC. All these pieces are fired in the same way, yet they all come out differently. Straw, copper, iron and pine needles add to the variety of patterns and colours in the work. By adding organic materials and metals to the process, many unique, complex and exciting pieces are created. The Avenue Gallery 2184 Oak Bay Avenue Monday - Saturday: 10am - 5pm, Sunday 12 - 4pm

Lorna Dockstader's simplified style and use of elegant colours and neutrals invokes themes of purity and solitude. "I am always amazed at the variety of moods that can be expressed in a work of art, after visiting Vancouver Island. I hope that the viewer of these new paintings feels what I did while exploring various locations. The thrill of standing so close to the crashing surf on Chesterman Beach, the tranquility experienced on an overcast day on the Wild Pacific Trail, and the simple joy of exploring the tide pools when the tide is out at Rathtrevor Beach. Favourite memories, revisited." - Lorna Dockstader The Avenue Gallery 2184 Oak Bay Avenue Monday - Saturday: 10am - 5pm, Sunday 12 - 4pm

Maarten Schaddelee is a sculptor who expresses his deep passion for life through his art. His enthusiasm bursts through his work. "A few years ago, my wife Nadine and I were in Florence, Italy. Walking through the beautiful narrow streets. We walked past an old stone church and heard gorgeous, young voices coming from inside. They were rehearsing for a concert that night. Of course, we went to the concert. That night I not only heard the music, I saw the music swirl around us. I will never forget the experience. It was a few years later that I remembered that fortunate experience and knew I had to put it in sculpture." "My hands make the voice of my heart visible." - Maarten Schaddelee The Avenue Gallery 2184 Oak Bay Avenue Monday - Saturday: 10am - 5pm, Sunday 12 - 4pm

Shinah begins her work on the floor, using the happy accidents of pigments as a backdrop. Then she rotates her canvas on the wall until she is satisfied with its composition and vitality. As a final touch, she adds colours in very fast and instinctive gestures. Shinah’s paintings are inspired by images and vibrations she perceives in her surroundings. Not just a flower but a spontaneous emotion by which the artist shares her feelings about love and life. The Avenue Gallery 2184 Oak Bay Avenue Monday - Saturday: 10am - 5pm, Sunday 12 - 4pm

Jo Ludwig’s unique works of art are created in a two-stage process of fusing multiple layers of glass then slumping them in a glass kiln. The assembled layers are placed in a glass kiln and heated until they fuse into a single piece of glass. After many finishing steps they are complete. The top layer of dichroic glass gives a brilliance to these small sculptures that dazzles all that behold them. Inspired by meanderings in nature, Patty Ripley's fresh, tranquil paintings share her deep connection with her surroundings. “Painting the essence of my experiences and conveying them through colour choices that make my heart sing is deeply satisfying... Anne Kelly is a master at the art of weaving maille. The word 'maille' is derived from the French word for net or mesh and is a material made of interwoven rings or links. Fascinated with ancient techniques of working with metal and gemstones, Anne creates beautiful, unique, wearable art. Many of her pieces involve an eclectic combination of contemporary and ancient metal fabrication techniques, but maille has remained a favourite element of her designs. Eunmi Conacher describes herself as a contemporary impressionist and expressionist artist. ‘My desire is to create paintings which bring energy to the canvas. My work is more an expression of the mood in the scene rather than a realistic picture of the scene. I use depth of colour to balance realism and abstract. My use of colour, form, and texture is intuitive. My hope is that the viewers connect emotionally with the painting in their own way. The result I strive for is a painting from the heart’. – Eunmi Conacher The Avenue Gallery 2184 Oak Bay Avenue Monday - Saturday: 10am - 5pm, Sunday 11am - 4:30pm

“The desire to create art has been with me for as long as I can remember. It satisfies a kind of primal urge to construct. The winding of the figures, for me, is a very intimate experience. It is where I try to translate the emotion or movement of the piece. My inspiration has always come from personal experience. During my working years in health care, I have been witness to turbulence and tenderness. My sculptural work represents these moments. It is a sort of communication that I find hard to put into words; They are, for me, small windows into shared experiences.” - Janis Woode The Avenue Gallery 2184 Oak Bay Avenue Monday - Saturday: 10am - 5pm, Sunday 11am - 4:30pm

Wind your way through the faceted landscapes of Philip Mix, where moments of time stand still, solid forms vibrate, and colour separates into prismatic layers. Dramatic and sculptural -- a kaleidoscope of colour and geometry. Time of day and natural elements appear reconstructed into a layered perspective that creates a stained glass collage out of our coastal habitat. Philip is intrigued with the intricacies of motion, rhythm and patterns found in nature such as leaves in the wind or ripples on the pond. His delight with colour and fascination with movement are themes that resonate throughout his work. "Our Pacific paradise, if anything, has an enduring sense of timelessness. It’s true the light is always shifting, from hazy to breaking brilliant, soft focus to rugged outline, but within the nuance there is persistent note of pristine clarity. Like a new Eden, its purity sings in harmonic tones, a subtle orchestration of wistful color that always holds my fascination." - Philip Mix The Avenue Gallery 2184 Oak Bay Avenue Monday - Saturday: 10am - 5pm, Sunday 11am - 4:30pm See more at www.theavenuegallery.com

Much of Brenda Roy’s jewellery explores contrasts in colour and texture: smooth stone and polished metal set off by fused or roller printed textures; precious gems and metals paired with rough minerals and contemporary designs that have the feel of ancient artifacts. She loves to play with the surprise of asymmetrical designs in unexpected material combinations and is one of the few metal artists in the country extensively using stone inlay in her work. “I believe there is still a place for beautiful, well-made objects and that these objects enrich our lives. A piece of jewellery acquires meaning over time as it develops associations with the stories of our lives, and these acquired meanings are as important for me as the artist’s original concepts.” - Brenda Roy The Avenue Gallery 2184 Oak Bay Avenue Monday - Saturday: 10am - 5pm, Sunday 11am - 4:30pm See more at www.theavenuegallery.com
