“Several different principles of design combine to create a successful landscape painting. For many years, I've wondered what it might be like to remove the subject matter and just create interesting lines, shapes and colours to describe the feeling of a place. As I began these new abstracts, I thought of summer near the water when we often walk along the shoreline and watch the brilliant white sails of boats, against the cerulean sky and deep indigo of the water. So many shades of blue, looking so fresh beside the pure whites. And so my exploration into abstraction began.” - Lorna Dockstader

Naoko Takenouchi creates hand-blown glass vessels with ethereal colors and intricate engraved designs usually depicting a visual metaphor or allegory. She has worked as a glass artist since 1983, when she began a four-year course of study in design and glassblowing at the Tama Art University, Tokyo. Subsequently, she studied glassblowing at the highly regarded New York Experimental Glass Workshop. In 1993, and again in 1998, she was honored with scholarships to attend the world-renowned Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State.

While Pauline Jans began her art practice painting vineyards and landscapes, a longing to express more deeply nudged her artwork from representational to abstract.
Pauline's daily practice of hiking rugged landscapes urged her to explore the emotional influence of craggy places and spaces and to release a background of precision. Her abstracts are process-driven, where exploration and discovery lead the way. Pauline's sensitivity to design and balance, coupled with her curiosity and experiencing the raw topography that flanks Okanagan Lake is a lovely juxtaposition to her search for depth and meaning.

Gordon Scott's early experimentation in a range of mediums – watercolour, charcoal and photography has led to his back-painted acrylic and ink on glass technique. He feels the use of glass panels combined with vivid colours has allowed him to fully express himself and create unique contemporary art. His panels that hang on the wall are equally as stunning as his tables.

Guy Hollington began his career in glass almost by chance; an offhand comment led to an introductory six-week course that then morphed into a passion for the blown glass medium. Further study at both the Corning Museum of Glass and the Pilchuk School of Glass provided insight into more of the intricacies of glass blowing and further refinement of his technique.

Lorna’s recurring theme of solitude is evident in her captivating paintings. She believes that subtracting non-essentials, as well as the use of elegant colours, and neutrals, achieves her desired result. “Certain places have the ability to increase our sense of peacefulness, in an unpredictable world. I create fictional visual events, inspired by nature. Using colours and contrasts in unique and unexpected ways enchants me and engages the viewer.” – Lorna Dockstader

Brenda Roy loves to play with the surprise of asymmetrical designs in unexpected material combinations. She is one of the few metal artists in Canada who extensively uses stone inlay in her work.
I believe there is still a place for beautiful, well-made objects and that these objects enrich our lives. A piece of jewellery acquires meaning over time as it develops associations with the stories of our lives, and these acquired meanings are as important for me as the artist’s original concepts. – Brenda Roy

Tanya is an artist striving to work in a classical way with traditional media. She never tires of the hushed silence of a still life and how the solidity of an object can be connected into a set up with an adjoining object of fragility. “I get lost in the choices and the beauty of balancing still life arrangements. When I have completed the arrangement of a set-up, I sit back and take a long moment just to savour its stillness.” That’s what she wants her viewer to experience, “See the light, to hear the stillness.” – Tanya Bone

The Avenue Gallery is thrilled to receive breathtaking, new gems from Bayot Heer, whose elegant, timeless jewellery designs are imbued with a European sensibility. Bayot considers working with precious metals and gemstones a rare privilege that comes with the responsibility to honour these materials with lasting designs. In this context, he is often reminded of the Italian inspired slow food movement – being mindful of earth’s resources we are trusted with. Bayot strives to live up to this excellent quote by Piet Hein; “true design asks one thing of us: to uncover what it covers.”

Corre Alice’s paintings often explore the relationship between the emotional and the intellectual and are an intuitive response with distinctly personal marks. “I paint freely but with formal restraints, respecting the integrity of the structure in the attempt to create tension. I intend to communicate to the viewer a recognizable sensation by forcing expression into a system, impulsively painting with regard to the logical. When I paint flowers, bees and trees it’s with a light heart and gratitude for this world of ours. It’s about colour and joy.” – Corre Alice

Shinah Lee begins her work on the floor, using the happy accidents of pigments as a backdrop. Then she rotates her canvas on the wall until she is satisfied with its composition and vitality. As a final touch, she adds colours in fast and instinctive gestures. Shinah's paintings are inspired by images and vibrations she perceives in her surroundings. Not just a flower, but a spontaneous emotion by which the artist shares her feelings about love and life.

A passionate landscape painter, Maria Josenhans creates oil paintings both outdoors on location and in her North Vancouver studio. Maria considers the landscape as her garden, a place of connecting with beauty that gives rise to something new and reaches beyond daily concerns. Whether it is a grand vista or an intimate pool by a stream, her aim is not to have the viewer experience what she sees and feels, but to create a space that shares a tender tribute to the ordinary.

Inspired by the work of the Inuit and by the work of Henry Moore and Rodin, Vance found himself drawn to the deceptive simplicity of using the form to suggest detail.
“I like to let the stone tell me what it wants to be…when I do this the end product is so much more alive than if I had forced my design upon it! Doing this also allows the stone to work with you and puts colours and patterns in places that you couldn’t plan any better. I carve wildlife, especially bears and owls as I find them a good vehicle for my sense of humour. Although I take my work seriously, I try not to take myself too seriously…so much of my work has a light playfulness about it!” -Vance Theoret

Much of Brenda Roy's work explores contrasts in colour and texture: smooth stone and polished metal set off by fused or roller printed textures; the play of colour in unique stone inlays; precious gems and metals paired with rough minerals or broken pottery shards; and contemporary designs that have the feel of ancient artifacts. As one of the few metal artists in the country extensively using stone inlay in her work, she constantly experiments to find unexpected and non-traditional ways of incorporating stone into jewellery pieces.
