Object Biographies: Artists’ Lives through their Archives

A printing block. Glaze samples. Pouches of pigments. Why are these items in UVic’s archives, and what can they tell us about the lives, relationships, artworks and practices of the artists who owned them? Object Biographies is a glimpse into the lives of artists through their archives, including those of Robin Hopper, Glenn Howarth, the Limners, Katharine Maltwood, Aiyyana Maracle, Sandra Meigs, Margaret Peterson,and Vincent Rickard. Addicts: Why don’t they just stop using so they would stop dying?

Dr. Ramm Hering will discuss “Addicts: Why don’t they just stop using so they would stop dying?” Admission is by donation; light refreshments will be served.
Medical science has developed a much better understanding of the neurobiology of addiction. Implementing evidence based policies is our best hope at decreasing the effects of the opioid crisis. But why is this such a challenge?
About Dr. Hering:
Dr. Hering is the Medical Director, Addiction Medicine for Island Health. He spearheaded the development of the Addiction Medicine Consult Service for Island Health and was the driving force behind the creation of a Rapid Access Addiction Clinic in Victoria. Dr. Hering serves as the Victoria Site Director for the British Columbia Centre on Substance Abuse (BCCSU) Addiction Medicine Fellowship program and works as a clinical consultant on various BCCSU projects.
Dr. Hering completed BSc and MSc (Neuroscience) degrees at McGill University, followed by his MD at the University of Calgary and a Family Medicine Residency at Dalhousie University. He then obtained a Diploma in Public Health – Health Services Management Stream and completed a Clinical Fellowship in Addiction Medicine at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, University of Toronto.

Our backyard is bigger than you think. 75% of B.C. is composed of mountain terrain that almost nobody will ever see. Living amongst us is a special breed of people. They are undefined by age, gender, profession and background; the draw of the mountains is so strong that their lives must revolve around it. After months of preparation, Martina and her 60 year-old mother, Tania embark on a 6 month, 2300 km. trek from Squamish B.C. through a relentless winter mountain wilderness to Alaska. And we meet others who share a passion for mountain life: a group of nuns inhabiting a mountain retreat; a photographer who is buried in an avalanche; an impassioned alpinist; a couple who has been living off grid for nearly 50 years; a focused snow artist. Shot in cinematic detail by filmmaker Grant Baldwin ("Just Eat It"; The Clean Bin Project") and with a GoPro (charged by a solar panel) by Martina and Tania, this film is a reminder of the scope of the natural world that we often take for granted or even ignore. We can understand why it is that First Nations people consider mountains to be alive and sacred.
