  1. TD Victoria International JazzFest Presents: Buddy Guy plus Special Guest $115.50/$99.50/$78.50 https://jazzvictoria.ca/buddy-guy/ “Buddy Guy is keeping the blues alive.” – The New Yorker The title of eight-time Grammy winner Buddy Guy‘s 2018 album says it all: The Blues Is Alive and Well. The legendary blues artist’s eighteenth solo LP and follow-up to 2015’s Born to Play Guitar received a 2019 Grammy Award for “Best Traditional Blues Album.” It showcases his raw and unadulterated sound and arrives on the heels of a spate of high visibility for the 83-year-old performer: at the 2016 Grammys, he picked up a trophy for “Best Blues Album” honouring Born to Play Guitar. A truly restless and energetic performer, it’s clear that the music—and Guy himself—aren’t going away anytime soon, and you can catch Buddy Guy and his band live at TD Victoria International JazzFest in 2022.
  2. AUDREY OCHOA QUARTET SATURDAY, JUNE 25 ~ 7PM HERMANN’S JAZZ CLUB $35 https://jazzvictoria.ca/audrey/ “Ochoa seems to approach her artistry the way Dizzy Gillespie did—taking the music seriously, but without seeing any reason for avoiding a good time.” – All About Jazz Audrey Ochoa is one of Edmonton’s most prolific trombone players. Her debut album, Trombone and Other Delights (2014), was widely acclaimed and spent three consecutive weeks as the number one Jazz album on the Earshot charts. Ochoa’s sophomore release, Afterthought (2017), rose to No. 1 on the Canadian jazz charts and broke the top 20 in the U.S. A rising star in her own right and a fixture of the Canadian music scene, she is decidedly captivating and original, and her most recent album Frankenhorn saw Ochoa win a Western Canadian Music Award. Audrey Ochoa exemplifies an artist who has dedicated herself to expertise while remaining relevant and light-hearted. Jim Head guitar, Mike Lent bass, Jon May drums
  3. ANDY MILNE & UNISON THURSDAY, JUNE 30 ~ 7PM HERMANN’S JAZZ CLUB $35 https://jazzvictoria.ca/andy-milne-unison/ “The emotionally complex album that came out of that session owes much to the single-minded focus of the three players as they moved fluently through Milne’s dynamic compositions.” – Downbeat Magazine For 30 years, award-winning pianist/composer Andy Milne has collaborated with dancers, visual artists, poets and musicians spanning jazz, classical, pop, folk, and world music. With his new group Unison, Milne explores the intimacy of the piano trio. The synchronistic relationship Milne has enjoyed with bassist John Hébert since 2010 is matchlessly rounded out with Grammy award-winning drummer Clarence Penn, who represents complimentary threads within the fabric of Milne’s piano trio philosophy – the intersection of texture and groove. Their 2020 debut recording, The Remission, won them a 2021 Juno award for “Jazz Album of the Year: Group.”

“Ethereal joy…Straddling relaxed jazz, funky electronics, vaguely psychedelic rock and spatial dub.” CLASH (UK) Victoria-based ASTROCOLOR formed in 2015 to perform and record live electronic music, recalling the sounds of Air, Massive Attack, and St. Germain. The band plays on the edges of funky house, breakbeat, jazz and ambient. Astrocolor III, their final in a trilogy of EPs that released in spring 2018, sees the band’s instrumental/electronic roots expand into traditional song formats that provide smooth yet catchy beats, built equally for a night of dancing at the club or chill party vibes at home. In 2017, they grooved their way through festivals such as Rifflandia, Song & Surf, Tall Tree, and Atmosphere Gathering, as well as performances in Toronto (Canadian Music Week) and Seattle (Upstream Music Festival). Most recently, they performed to a packed audience at the Centennial Square outdoor stage for TD Victoria International JazzFest 2019. Look no further for a mood booster, as Astrocolor’s debut at Hermann’s Upstairs will transport listeners to dream-like, funk-laden atmospheres that blissfully inspire mental repose, dancing, and pure, downright fun. 13. Straight out of Havana… A blazing ensemble of deeply soulful mambo and “a groove as intense as a runaway train.” – NPR Havana’s top musicians join forces with some of the most creative and spirited talents of New York’s Latin music scene to create Orquesta Akokán. This big band collective reinvigorates the sound of Cuban’s golden era mambo with a bold new energy reminiscent of Benny Moré, Pérez Prado, and banda gigante of the 1940's and 50's. In spring 2018, their self-titled first album released with Daptone Records. The album boasts all original songs recorded at the historic state-run Estudios Areito with Cuba's finest players, young and old, led by the inimitable and dynamic singer José "Pepito" Gómez, produced by Chulo Records' Jacob Plasse, with incendiary arrangements by Michael Eckroth. The ferocious and pedigreed wind and rhythm sections consist of musicians from storied groups including Irakere, NG La Banda, and Los Van Van. Robust, time-tested musical architectures of son cubano and mambo are honored and modernized through a synthesis of the rich compositional styles of Havana, New York, and beyond. Orquesta Akokán made their US debut in July 2018, which included a date at Lincoln Center, and continues their tour to Victoria, BC, to showcase the magnitude of their soulful, captivating music and myriad of rhythmic styles. Thursday, November 14 – 8:00pm ~ $65.00/$53.00 (tax and service charge included) Orquesta Akokán: https://www.orquestaakokan.com/ Ticket exclusively available through: Royal & McPherson Box Office (250-386-6121 or online at rmts.bc.ca).
