  1. In a grid connected setting solar makes sense on the coast. BC Hydro is effectively paying for the storage and covering intermittency. In an off-grid situation they make little economic sense. This is because of seasonal variability which the author of this article doesn't even mention. Although the capacity factor for solar averages 14.7% in Victoria - see Renewables.ninja - it is less than 3% in December, when you need the power, and more than 23% in June. Off-grid you would have to burn a lot of generator fuel to get by unless you covered a huge area with solar panels and had serious battery backup.
