Gallery Associates Sunday Art Lecture Series 2023 As if Autumn Leaves: Age in Asian and Western Art. By Dr. Katherine Young (In-Person) The 2023 Sunday Art Lecture Series features Dr. Katherine Young’s richly illustrated overview of youth and old age in South Asia, East Asia and the West. The series portrays age as perceived through different cultural values, symbols and archetypes. Showcasing forms which are abstract and minimalist to those which are realistic, the lectures touch on the distinctive ways three cultures understand power, status, loss and suffering through visual images. They also examine religious, social, and political movements as well as technological advances that shape the various perceptions of age. Numerous images illustrating the lectures are drawn from the AGGV’S extensive collection of Asian art. In Canada its collection ranks second only to that of the Royal Ontario Museum. Please join us in the Gallery for this popular series presented by the Gallery Associates. Light refreshments will be served. Only 75 seats available. Series subscribers will enjoy access to recordings of the lecture series for a limited time. General $35 | Members and Students$30 Get the series of 3 lectures: $90 General Admission; $75 Gallery Members and Students (buy series tickets by Feb 26). In addition, Dr. Young addresses how new portraiture styles and photography reverse the erasure of old age in traditional visual arts. BUY SINGLE TICKET March 5, 2-4pm Celebration of Elders in East Asian Art This lecture explores ancestral portraits of family elders and statues of the old Confucius as the embodiment of educated wisdom at the heart of the government. Dr. Young also illustrates Daoism’s and Buddhism’s reverence for longevity and the elderly which is embodied in symbols of flora and fauna. BUY SINGLE TICKET March 12, 2-4pm PDT Images of Age in Western Art Beginning with Greco-Roman and Hellenistic images, followed by early Christian and pre-modern sculptures and portraits, Dr. Young illustrates the Western perception of Age. GARDENS AS ART: AESTHETIC JOURNEYS AROUND THE WORLD The Gallery Associates' popular Sunday Art Lectures series RESUMES ONLINE in October for this year's final two lectures exploring GARDENS AS ART in Italy and Japan. Previously sold out - we now have room online. All previously sold tickets honoured & Ticket Sales have re-opened. OCTOBER 18: David E. Young will talk about SHIBUSA AESTHETICS: SPONTANEITY IN JAPANESE GARDENS. The goal of traditional Japanese gardens is to re-create nature on a small scale and in an artistic way that improves upon nature. Keeping in mind that the word “art” comes from the same word as “artificial,” how can something be natural and artificial at the same time? This interesting challenge was met in Japan with the concept of shibusa, which can be translated as “restrained spontaneity” or “spontaneity of effect.” OCTOBER 25: In the final lecture of the 2020 series, Betsy Tumasonis will talk about NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE'S GIARDINO DEI TAROCCHI: A FRENCH ARTIST AND HER ITALIAN SCULPTURE GARDEN. Niki de Saint Phalle (1930 – 2002) was a French artist and sculptor who associated in the early 1960s with the French Nouveaux Realistes group. She experimented with assemblages made of bizarre collections of objects, evoking a Dadaist sense of the absurd. In 1980 she began work on her “Giardino dei Tarocchi” (Tarot Garden) in Tuscany. She filled the park-like property with enormous colourful otherworldly figures based on images from the Tarot deck (fortune-telling cards). A stroll through the garden is a magical experience. Hosted by Dan Mato and sponsored by the Gallery Associates, proceeds go to the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. PLEASE JOIN US for these two fascinating webinars!
