The Avenue Gallery is thrilled to introduce Shell Cooper, a South African-born, British Columbia-based abstract painter whose work is shaped by the landscapes and memories of Canada, Costa Rica, and her South African origins. Working intuitively in acrylic, Shell creates large-scale layered paintings that draw on botanical forms and remembered landscapes while exploring the emotional terrain of the human experience. Themes of hope, joy, uncertainty, resilience, wonder, and loss are woven through her work, creating evocative spaces that invite personal reflection and connection.   Image: A Soft Drift Of Petals by Shell Cooper, Acrylic on canvas, 53 x 58 inches   View Shell's collection online: Shell Cooper - The Avenue Gallery

    11am - 4pm May 30 & 31
Again this year, a group of artists and creatives in the greater Fernwood area are opening their studios, homes and gardens to visitors.  This year there are 20 locations in both Fernwood and Oaklands, featuring more than two dozen artists showing a wide variety of local art. There will be paintings, both abstract and realistic, ceramics, jewelry, garden art, printmaking, photography and collage. There’s even a roaming storyteller.
Since its beginning in 2008, this free, family-friendly event has welcomed guests who want to see and possibly purchase art of a variety of types. Visitors can enjoy strolling leafy streets, many with heritage homes and gardens, and exploring back yard studios and gardens full of art in one of the oldest parts of Victoria.
Brochures are being distributed to local businesses and stores around town with a detailed map of the venues and details about the participating artists.
Some artists also offer activities for families with children, and many of the locations are wheelchair accessible.  Visitors can stroll the neighbourhood, enjoy food and beverages in Fernwood’s cafes and bistros, and view or purchase a wide variety of art at reasonable prices.
As an added bonus this year, the Fernwood Art Stroll is collaborating with the Fernwood Cat Walk, who's event is on Saturday, May 30th. Some of the Art Stroll participants are showing their cats as well was their art.
An online map and information about participants in the 2025 Fernwood Art Stroll can be downloaded at www.fernwoodartstroll.ca

Three Victoria artists present Writ Large - Contemporary Works on Paper

Three Victoria artists draw on their pasts as professional writers and editors to exhibit a collection of large-format works inspired by the emotional and intellectual energy of written language.
Georgina Montgomery, Louise Oborne, and MaryLou Wakefield use words and text as part of their visual language to amplify a compelling idea, question, or life experience personally meaningful to them.
In this series, the artists demonstrate their individual stylistic approaches to interpreting 'Writ Large' and invite viewers to find their own meaning and interpretation in the works.
Writ Large will be on at arc.hive artist run centre October 4 - 19 and open for viewing Saturdays and Sundays from 12 - 4 pm.
An opening reception with the artists in attendance will be on Friday, October 3, from 7 - 9 pm.
For more information about the artists and the exhibition, visit www.writ-large.art

A community of male-voice singers who sing for health and joy: we are the Victoria Arion Male Choir. Our history goes back to 1893 when the Arion Club of Victoria gave its first public concert.
Our mission is to maintain the great tradition of male-voice choral music, and to share that music through two or more public concerts each year.  The choir also performs at senior residences, and the Victoria Remembrance Day ceremony at the BC Legislature.
VAMC, supports music education through our choral scholarship program, which allows up to four student musicians to sing with us each year. We welcome new members: come and share with us the joy of male choral music!
The choir is actively seeking new singers for our non-audition choir in September 2026, with open houses on Monday September 7th, 14th, and 21h. The choir sings four-part harmony, and our repertoire covers classical, spiritual, folk, and contemporary music.
We meet Monday’s, 7:00PM at Cordova Bay United Church, 813 Claremont Ave. The choir is also looking for choral scholars. For more information on becoming a member or if you want to know more about the choral scholarship program, please contact Jim Johnson at [email protected] or check out our website at www.vamc.ca.
