Bruce Edmundson began wood carving in the early 1990s while working in the forest industry doing timber development and silviculture work. Interest in high quality wood was a natural development of working in the BC forests. An especial interest was the locally exotic or unusual. The natural result is burls. These abnormal growths found on most trees demonstrate - to the extreme - the characteristics that people cherish in wood. Again this year, a group of artists and creatives in the greater Fernwood area are opening their studios, homes and gardens to visitors. This year there are 20 locations in both Fernwood and Oaklands, featuring more than two dozen artists showing a wide variety of local art. There will be paintings, both abstract and realistic, ceramics, jewelry, garden art, printmaking, photography and collage. There’s even a roaming storyteller.
Since its beginning in 2008, this free, family-friendly event has welcomed guests who want to see and possibly purchase art of a variety of types. Visitors can enjoy strolling leafy streets, many with heritage homes and gardens, and exploring back yard studios and gardens full of art in one of the oldest parts of Victoria.
Brochures are being distributed to local businesses and stores around town with a detailed map of the venues and details about the participating artists.
Some artists also offer activities for families with children, and many of the locations are wheelchair accessible. Visitors can stroll the neighbourhood, enjoy food and beverages in Fernwood’s cafes and bistros, and view or purchase a wide variety of art at reasonable prices.
As an added bonus this year, the Fernwood Art Stroll is collaborating with the Fernwood Cat Walk, who's event is on Saturday, May 30th. Some of the Art Stroll participants are showing their cats as well was their art.

Starting with a decision to seek a little bit of happiness on the eve of her 57th birthday Alisha morphed from a reserved prose writer, who feared rejection, into a gregarious performer eager to face the instant judgement that defines poetry slams. Alisha convinces the audience it’s never too late to ask: “What small change can help unlock my best self?”

About the Artist
Alisha Richard began living authentically as a woman in early 2023. After writing prose for decades, her transition inspired a venture into poetry and spoken word performance to share her journey. A gifted storyteller, in 2025, she became a theater kid at age 59. Over the past 18 months, she has performed in four professionally-staged productions as well as debuting and refining her own story: “Alisha’s Light”.
Alisha has performed up and down the California coast, won multiple poetry slams and was selected as the featured poet in a 2024 anthology earning a $500 prize and six headline opportunities. Her work strives to break down barriers and stigma while showing others the joy of living onesʹ truth and inspiring them to seek out their best selves.

Three Victoria artists present Writ Large - Contemporary Works on Paper
Three Victoria artists draw on their pasts as professional writers and editors to exhibit a collection of large-format works inspired by the emotional and intellectual energy of written language.
Georgina Montgomery, Louise Oborne, and MaryLou Wakefield use words and text as part of their visual language to amplify a compelling idea, question, or life experience personally meaningful to them.
In this series, the artists demonstrate their individual stylistic approaches to interpreting 'Writ Large' and invite viewers to find their own meaning and interpretation in the works.
Writ Large will be on at arc.hive artist run centre October 4 - 19 and open for viewing Saturdays and Sundays from 12 - 4 pm.
An opening reception with the artists in attendance will be on Friday, October 3, from 7 - 9 pm.

Sticks and Stone Percussion has been bringing music to the streets, concert halls, schools, birthday parties and celebration events of the Edmonton area since 2017. They play a little bit of every style of music and performances have included playing for the CBC Turkey Drive, the Edmonton Fringe Festival, the Epcor Christmas Gala, the ATB/TELUS Barbeque and the City of Edmonton New Year’s Eve in the Winspear. Their 2020 debut album “Marimba Around the World” mixed folk music from 15 countries with pop, rock and jazz. They have played for connect audiences from ages 2 to 95 and might equally present as punk or polite. They most widely with audiences by playing covers of music they might recognize, including Disney and video-game. Through the rosewood warmth of the marimba, they share a joyful experience that is sure to leave audiences smiling.
