A fresh perspective from Richard Motchman, as he expands on his exploration of tangled growth and intimate forest landscapes. While his work often draws us deep into the quiet complexity of undergrowth, this stunning new painting, Parksville Bay, Parksville opens outward, revealing coastal rocks and the ocean beyond. The result is a layered sense of depth that still invites the same contemplative looking his paintings are known for.
Born in Mombasa, Kenya, and raised in Penticton, BC, Richard's artistic journey began at an early age. Inspired by his reading of Vincent van Gogh in his teens, he became determined to pursue a life in art. Richard went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Arts from the University of Victoria in 1982. Three Victoria artists present Writ Large - Contemporary Works on Paper
Three Victoria artists draw on their pasts as professional writers and editors to exhibit a collection of large-format works inspired by the emotional and intellectual energy of written language.
Georgina Montgomery, Louise Oborne, and MaryLou Wakefield use words and text as part of their visual language to amplify a compelling idea, question, or life experience personally meaningful to them.
In this series, the artists demonstrate their individual stylistic approaches to interpreting 'Writ Large' and invite viewers to find their own meaning and interpretation in the works.
Writ Large will be on at arc.hive artist run centre October 4 - 19 and open for viewing Saturdays and Sundays from 12 - 4 pm.
An opening reception with the artists in attendance will be on Friday, October 3, from 7 - 9 pm.
