Again this year, a group of artists and creatives in the greater Fernwood area are opening their studios, homes and gardens to visitors. This year there are 20 locations in both Fernwood and Oaklands, featuring more than two dozen artists showing a wide variety of local art. There will be paintings, both abstract and realistic, ceramics, jewelry, garden art, printmaking, photography and collage. There’s even a roaming storyteller.
Since its beginning in 2008, this free, family-friendly event has welcomed guests who want to see and possibly purchase art of a variety of types. Visitors can enjoy strolling leafy streets, many with heritage homes and gardens, and exploring back yard studios and gardens full of art in one of the oldest parts of Victoria.
Brochures are being distributed to local businesses and stores around town with a detailed map of the venues and details about the participating artists.
Some artists also offer activities for families with children, and many of the locations are wheelchair accessible. Visitors can stroll the neighbourhood, enjoy food and beverages in Fernwood’s cafes and bistros, and view or purchase a wide variety of art at reasonable prices.
As an added bonus this year, the Fernwood Art Stroll is collaborating with the Fernwood Cat Walk, who's event is on Saturday, May 30th. Some of the Art Stroll participants are showing their cats as well was their art.

Three Victoria artists present Writ Large - Contemporary Works on Paper
Three Victoria artists draw on their pasts as professional writers and editors to exhibit a collection of large-format works inspired by the emotional and intellectual energy of written language.
Georgina Montgomery, Louise Oborne, and MaryLou Wakefield use words and text as part of their visual language to amplify a compelling idea, question, or life experience personally meaningful to them.
In this series, the artists demonstrate their individual stylistic approaches to interpreting 'Writ Large' and invite viewers to find their own meaning and interpretation in the works.
Writ Large will be on at arc.hive artist run centre October 4 - 19 and open for viewing Saturdays and Sundays from 12 - 4 pm.
An opening reception with the artists in attendance will be on Friday, October 3, from 7 - 9 pm.

Curated by Sherri Shinobu Kajiwara, Director/Curator at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre, Burnaby, BC with support from her Past Wrongs Future Choices project curatorial team: Ciel Dong, Naomi Keenan O’Shea, Sarah Stillwell, and Lesley Marshall.
DIS – displaced, dispersed, dispossessed pairs concurrent group exhibits at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre and the University of Victoria Legacy Art Gallery, bringing together work from contemporary artists exploring the lasting influence of the Second World War on Nikkei communities globally.
Through installation, video, sculpture-informed 2D/3D work, performance, illustration, and text-based practices, participating artists engage inherited memory, cultural continuity, and intergenerational experience.

WARA-WARA brings together 21 artists and four collectives from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, whose work has been shaped by the city's vibrant street art, graffiti, mural and comic communities. Taking its title from the Javanese term ‘wara-wara’ – an announcement, warning or public call – the exhibition explores artistic practice as a way of responding collectively to moments of social, political and environmental uncertainty.
Developed through a collaboration between Survive! Garage (Yogyakarta), Richard Fox (UVic, Pacific & Asian Studies), the University of Victoria Art Collections and the participating artists and collectives, WARA-WARA presents paintings, drawings, prints and new site-responsive work alongside photographs and video documentation from the project's origins in Yogyakarta.

Beyond the visual mediums, each piece is thoughtfully paired with personal writings. These candid reflections offer a window into the artists’ inner worlds—revealing how the patience, resilience, and emotional complexity of caregiving shape their creative process, and how making art, in turn, provides space for reflection, grounding, and renewal.
