Vance Theoret allows the stone to guide his creative process, trusting it to reveal what it is meant to become. This intuitive approach highlights the natural colours and patterns in ways that planned designs often cannot. While he takes his work seriously, a touch of playfulness in his character brings a unique charm to his sculptures.

Architectures of Protection reflects on ideas and modes of protection and refuge – with regards to oneself, to community, knowledge, culture, identity, and land. What are these spaces and practices? What is protection for some and not for others? Together, in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and in the current global social and political climate, the artworks in Architectures of Protection direct critical attention towards systems and structures that shape and impact everyday and sacred environments and encounters, alongside individual and collective relationships with the land.
This exhibition features artworks by Dana Claxton, Jessica Karuhanga, Emilio Rojas, Beth Stuart, and France Trépanier.

“A killer line-up of players, composers and performers…who converge on an extremely cosmopolitan, sleek, rhythm-forward, modern sound.” – NPR
Multinational and multigenerational jazz supergroup ARTEMIS is a powerful ensemble of instrumental virtuosos and educators. Founded by 5-time JUNO-winning pianist/composer Renee Rosnes, the quintet also consists of acclaimed Canadian trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, New York's prolific “legend-in-the-making” saxophonist Nicole Glover, Hyogo Japan’s award-winning bassist/composer Noriko Ueda, and New York's modern jazz icon/DownBeat’s Top 20 jazz drummer Allison Miller.
After experiencing an ARTEMIS live show at the 2018 Newport Jazz Festival, Blue Note Records President, Don Was, signed the band to the label. Their third recording Arboresque released February 2025. The album is testament to the group’s evolving musical landscape featuring stellar arrangements and riveting originals contributed by all members of the band.
Performances across North America and Europe at major venues and festivals have garnered high praise from audiences and critics alike. It is no wonder that ARTEMIS has been awarded #1 “Jazz Group of the Year” in the Annual Downbeat Readers Poll in both 2023 and 2024. Members of ARTEMIS have collaborated with Esperanza Spalding, Corinne Bailey Rae, Sarah McLachlan, Terri Lyne Carrington, Maria Schneider, Wayne Shorter, Christian McBride, Chris Potter, Joe Henderson, and many more. From original music to mind-bending arrangements of eclectic material, ARTEMIS performs with power, passion, and high-wire intensity. Witness the paragon of great modern jazz live here in Victoria as ARTEMIS makes their TD JazzFest debut in 2025!

“Together with Marquis Hill and his trumpet, New Jazz rises on the throne of modern mainstream.” – Modern Jazz
Chicago’s internationally renowned trumpeter, composer and bandleader Marquis Hill breaks down the barriers that divide musical genres. Contemporary and classic jazz, hip-hop, R&B, Chicago house, neo-soul—to Hill, they’re all essential elements of the profound African-American creative heritage he’s a part of. That mission to bring styles together, complemented by Hill’s absolute mastery of his instrument, can be heard on his albums The Way We Play (2016), Modern Flows Vol. II (2018), Love Tape (2019), Soul Sign (2020), and Rituals & Routines (2023). His sound is both deeply distinctive and a tour through jazz-trumpet history, evoking the high-drama stillness and space of Miles; the undeniable virtuosity of Clifford Brown and Freddie Hubbard; the groove savvy phrasing of Lee Morgan and Donald Byrd; and much more. After winning the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz prize in 2014, he became a presence on the global scene virtually overnight and earned first place in the “Rising Star–Trumpet” category in DownBeat’s Critics Poll in 2016. He has supported and guested with a who’s who of jazz that includes Marcus Miller, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Boney James, Kurt Elling, Joe Lovano and Hill’s trailblazing Chicago peer Makaya McCraven. Today, Hill maintains a nonstop touring schedule, and after appearing last at TD JazzFest 2019, now brings his 2024 album Composers Collective: Beyond the Jukebox to Victoria audiences.
