Rebecca Barten | Michael Bucuzzo | Alex MacKenzie | Julia Rose Petrocelli
A program of artists' moving image works engaging with concepts of escape velocity: traceries of transition, anticipation of arrival, preempting the past. In a period of perpetual fright, these four films choose flight—kidnapping themselves through documents of departure and manifest motion. Abstracted tarmac markings and highway residue join hijacked collage and appropriated advertising: runways and runaways in search of time and distance from the everyday world.

“No matter what she sings about, Peyroux… does it with intelligence and wit, culturally aware and musically sweet-natured.” – The Arts Desk
Georgia-based, Paris-raised singer-songwriter Madeleine Peyroux has captivated audiences for over three decades with her soulful voice, impeccable phrasing, and timeless artistry. Often compared to Billie Holiday, Peyroux blends jazz, blues, and folk influences into a sound that is both classic and uniquely her own. With a career that began busking on the streets of Paris, Peyroux rose to international acclaim, earning multiple awards and mainstream success in 2004 when her album Careless Love sold half a million copies. Her music is celebrated for its heartfelt lyricism and understated elegance, making her one of the most iconic voices in contemporary jazz.
Peyroux has toured and collaborated with luminaries such as k.d. lang, Meshell Ndegeocello, Marc Ribot, and Walter Becker. Her brand-new ninth album Let’s Walk (2024) deftly interweaves jazz, folk, and chamber pop, and is Peyroux’s most assured, courageous work to date. She first appeared at TD JazzFest 2005, and we now welcome back this living legend and her band live at TD JazzFest 2025’s opening night. Secure your spot for an unforgettable evening of world-class music with an artist in peak form!

“There isn’t a handy term or genre for the music that Kneebody creates. It’s a band thoroughly acquainted with 1960s free-bop, 1970s jazz rock, 1990s hip-hop and postmillennial indie rock; along with classical postminimalism. (I’m leaving something out, I’m sure.) Whatever the terminology, this group has an audience” — New York Times
Over two decades, GRAMMY-nominated band Kneebody has created a genre and style all its own. Their sound mixes explosive rock energy and high-level nuanced chamber ensemble, set within the frames of highly wrought compositions that are balanced with adventurous no-holds-barred improvising. Keyboardist Adam Benjamin, trumpeter Shane Endsley, saxophonist Ben Wendel and drummer/bassist Nate Wood formed Kneebody amid the vibrant and eclectic music scene of 2001 Los Angeles. In 2005, Kneebody released their debut self-titled album on Dave Douglas’ Greenleaf Music Label. They went on to release Low Electrical Worker (2007), and 12 Songs of Charles Ives (2009) with vocalist Theo Bleckmann, which received a GRAMMY nomination. In 2015, Kneebody’s groundbreaking collaboration with electronic musician Daedelus on Kneedelus was released on Flying Lotus’ imprint Brainfeeder records to praise from critics and audiences alike. Since then, they’ve appeared at TD JazzFest 2015 opening for The Bad Plus Joshua Redman, and released acclaimed album Anti-Hero (2017), EP By Fire (2019), album Chapters (2019), and live album Live at Le Crescent (2022). Their new album Reach releases in April 2025, and they bring material from that album and more to TD JazzFest 2025!
