DAY
October 26, 2025 November 02, 2025
Wind your way through the faceted landscapes of Philip Mix, where moments of time stand still, solid forms vibrate, and colour separates into prismatic layers. Dramatic and sculptural -- a kaleidoscope of colour and geometry. Time of day and natural elements appear reconstructed into a layered perspective that creates a stained-glass collage out of our coastal habitat.

Three Victoria artists present Writ Large - Contemporary Works on Paper
Three Victoria artists draw on their pasts as professional writers and editors to exhibit a collection of large-format works inspired by the emotional and intellectual energy of written language.
Georgina Montgomery, Louise Oborne, and MaryLou Wakefield use words and text as part of their visual language to amplify a compelling idea, question, or life experience personally meaningful to them.
In this series, the artists demonstrate their individual stylistic approaches to interpreting 'Writ Large' and invite viewers to find their own meaning and interpretation in the works.
Writ Large will be on at arc.hive artist run centre October 4 - 19 and open for viewing Saturdays and Sundays from 12 - 4 pm.
An opening reception with the artists in attendance will be on Friday, October 3, from 7 - 9 pm.
For more information about the artists and the exhibition, visit www.writ-large.art

Brass Queens is a nine-piece female-led, New York-based brass band that has been dominating the brass band scene since 2019. Inspired by the soulful sounds of New Orleans, the Brass Queens’ band consists of one sousaphone, drums (both line and set), two trombones, one alto sax, one tenor sax, three trumpets and a whole lot of passion. Their songs are spiced with a wide range of musical influences including Balkan, mambo, film scores, pop, and classic rock. Becoming a fixture in the local music scene and dubbed “the hardest working band in town,” the Queens gained a dedicated following through outdoor performances on the streets of Brooklyn. In February 2021, Brass Queens released their debut EP Royal Street. In November 2023, the band released their first full-length album titled Black & Gold, and less than a year later, their second full-length album and their first album of all-original music titled Hot Tub Sessions Vol. I.
Brass Queens tour regularly across the USA and internationally, including Canada, with sold-out shows and performances at various events and programs including The Met Gala, Brooklyn Bowl, Good Morning America, and Ottawa Jazz Festival. The band has developed a signature style that sits right at the intersection of the Big Apple and the Big Easy. The result is a nonstop party: a Brass Queens show will have you singing along to classic pop hits, dancing your heart out to reggaeton, and feeling like you’ve been transported to New Orleans’ Frenchman Street. They’re bringing New Orleans brass band tradition with a New York twist all the way to Victoria’s Wicket Hall this fall – get ready to dance! Alex Harris trumpet, Ally Chapel saxophone, Minerva Johnson trumpet/percussion, Stephanie King trumpet, Jenna Murdoch saxophone, Stephanie Young trombone, Heather Ewer sousaphone, Ashley Baier drums

Octet Victoria presents Howells' Requiem — a luminous and hauntingly beautiful masterpiece. The concert program also features exquisite sacred works by Joanna Marsh, Arvo Pärt, Healey Willan, and James MacMillan. This will be an unforgettable evening of choral music that contemplates the spirit of death, loss, and light. We are also expanding our performing forces for this special concert! This rendition of Octet Victoria will be a 16-voice, fully conducted ensemble, led by Char Hodgkins and David Stratkauskas. Join us in one of Victoria’s most resonant and beautiful acoustic spaces — St. John the Divine Anglican Church — for a night of vocal artistry.
Founded by Char Hodgkins in 2022, Octet Victoria is a fully professional vocal ensemble based in Victoria, BC, dedicated to exploring choral music from every era — from Renaissance motets to music by today’s most compelling composers.
DONATIONS ENCOURAGED
A portion of the door donations from our solo concerts always go to local Indigenous organizations such as Raven Trust Foundation and the Victoria Native Friendship Centre. For this concert, we will be donating 50% of the proceeds to these wonderful organizations. This professional choir is fully funded by artistic director Char Hodgkins, who is passionate about creating art in their own way! We are not a registered charity or non-profit organization, and we are not a recipient of any grants. Thank you for your support! It goes toward both sustaining local music and supporting nearby Indigenous community resources!
