Lorna Dockstader's recurring themes of purity and solitude are evident in her abstracted landscapes. She is particularly drawn to the landscapes of western Canada. "Echoes of Ocean and Mist" was inspired by a walk along Chesterman Beach on a misty September day, where high surf and crashing white foam left an indelible impression. The contrasts and fluid motion in the artwork reflect the artist’s experience of that powerful coast landscape.

Works by local artist Judy Mclaren at Fortune Gallery

Reflections’ is a collection of recent seascapes by Judy McLaren. Inspired by her love of nature, particularly by her love of the seashore where she lives, she has captured the sea and shore in all its many moods.  The power of a coming storm and the calm that follows, the subtle changes of light at the end of the day and the brilliance of the descending sun, the drama of a point of light in a darkening sky - this is the poetry that has inspired her brush. In each painting, she has studied the conversation between sea and sky, between rock and vegetation, between light and dark and the wonderful movement that is created by the contours of the shore, shaped by wind and weather.

Her brushwork typifies the energy and passion that imbue her work. She uses reference material as a starting point and is not interested in a literal representation. Instead, it provides her with an opportunity to explore artistic expression.
Since her diagnosis of Stage Four Breast Cancer, her intention has been to live life to the fullest possible.  Every day is a gift. Each walk down to the sea to watch the waves and study the wildlife is different and precious. Every moment with family and friendships is to be treasured.

Judy has been an active artist since graduating from the Ontario College of Art in 1979. She considers her art a work in progress, continually evolving and developing. Her paintings have been exhibited in galleries in Victoria and have won several top prizes at the Sooke Fine Art Show, the Sidney Fine Art Show and in plein air competition. She has also received numerous commissions and spent seven months as ‘artist in residence’ at the Empress Hotel. She lives in Deep Cove, with her husband.
