I live on the north side of Langford Lake, surrounded by Garry Oaks and camas. I keep on top of the invasives-broom, daphne, and brambles, to name a few. It's heaven on earth and I am fully aware of how lucky I am to live in a red-listed paradise. I've been told, by those who would know, that a local developer is waiting for me to die so s/he can buy my property cheap, consolidate it with previously-acquired properties, blast it down to the bedrock, and turn it into apartment blocks. Sickening. I try not to think about it. I can't fathom why Langford hasn't put this area onto a priority list for parkland. If we really were the "Best Community in Canada" we would preserve a teensy weensy bit of what made Greater Victoria beautiful in the first place.
Hi Cynthia—heaven on earth indeed! You are so fortunate to live with an intact Garry Oak ecosystem on your property. Thank you for tending it so lovingly. If you are worried about the fate of your property after you pass on, you could work with our local land trust, Habitat Aquisition Trust, to put a conservation covenant on your land. This would spare it from future development! See this link for details: http://www.hat.bc.ca/our-blog/protect-my-land
