Mary-Jean Butler's new oil paintings reflect the rugged landscape of British Columbia's coastline. Her education in both fine art and graphic design play a strong role in the stylization of her work. The focus of my work is the exploration of looking inward when interpreting the landscape, the opposition of different forms, lines and colour to intensify each element's dynamic properties. Again this year, a group of artists and creatives in the greater Fernwood area are opening their studios, homes and gardens to visitors. This year there are 20 locations in both Fernwood and Oaklands, featuring more than two dozen artists showing a wide variety of local art. There will be paintings, both abstract and realistic, ceramics, jewelry, garden art, printmaking, photography and collage. There’s even a roaming storyteller.
Since its beginning in 2008, this free, family-friendly event has welcomed guests who want to see and possibly purchase art of a variety of types. Visitors can enjoy strolling leafy streets, many with heritage homes and gardens, and exploring back yard studios and gardens full of art in one of the oldest parts of Victoria.
Brochures are being distributed to local businesses and stores around town with a detailed map of the venues and details about the participating artists.
Some artists also offer activities for families with children, and many of the locations are wheelchair accessible. Visitors can stroll the neighbourhood, enjoy food and beverages in Fernwood’s cafes and bistros, and view or purchase a wide variety of art at reasonable prices.
As an added bonus this year, the Fernwood Art Stroll is collaborating with the Fernwood Cat Walk, who's event is on Saturday, May 30th. Some of the Art Stroll participants are showing their cats as well was their art.

Three Victoria artists present Writ Large - Contemporary Works on Paper
Three Victoria artists draw on their pasts as professional writers and editors to exhibit a collection of large-format works inspired by the emotional and intellectual energy of written language.
Georgina Montgomery, Louise Oborne, and MaryLou Wakefield use words and text as part of their visual language to amplify a compelling idea, question, or life experience personally meaningful to them.
In this series, the artists demonstrate their individual stylistic approaches to interpreting 'Writ Large' and invite viewers to find their own meaning and interpretation in the works.
Writ Large will be on at arc.hive artist run centre October 4 - 19 and open for viewing Saturdays and Sundays from 12 - 4 pm.
An opening reception with the artists in attendance will be on Friday, October 3, from 7 - 9 pm.

Montréal pianist and composer François Bourassa stands among Canada’s most celebrated modern jazz artists. A multiple Félix Award winner and JUNO nominee with eleven albums under his belt, he has built an international reputation for lyrical composition, rhythmic sophistication, and seamless ensemble interplay. His album L’impact du silence (2022) and his latest release Swirl (2023) showcase his quartet’s refined balance of structure and improvisation. Bourassa has toured extensively in Western Canada and last appeared at TD JazzFest in 2018; this marks a welcome return to TD Victoria International JazzFest with his longstanding quartet. Texas-based five-time GRAMMY-winning guitarist, composer, producer, and instructor Mark Lettieri is one of modern groove music’s defining voices. Best known as a longtime member of the genre-blurring collective Snarky Puppy, as well as a founding member of The Fearless Flyers alongside Cory Wong, Lettieri has built an international reputation as a session musician proficient in a multitude of styles. He has recorded and performed in virtually every genre of popular music with both independent and major-label artists, ranging from Erykah Badu to David Crosby. With the Mark Lettieri Group, he channels instrumental funk, jazz fusion, and R&B into tightly arranged, groove-forward compositions reminiscent of The Meters, John Scofield, and Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters era. The group’s latest album, Can I Tell You Something? (2023), released on GroundUP Music, continues a solo catalog alongside dozens of collaborative recordings. Although he has toured Canada extensively, this marks his long-anticipated TD Victoria International JazzFest debut as a bandleader. Guitarists, groove enthusiasts, and fusion fans alike should secure tickets early. This will be one of the festival’s most rhythmically explosive nights.

As a JUNO-nominated, WCMA-winning recording artist, Winnipeg-born Erin Propp has established herself as a mainstay in the Manitoba music scene and is known across Canada for her authentic interpretation of melody within the jazz genre. Blending atmospheric textures, folk lyricism, and modern jazz harmony, Propp is a highly sought-after artist for co-writes, collaborations, and counsel. An experimental exploration between jazz and folk, Propp’s new full-length solo album is being released in 2026.
