Aileen Vantomme is a ceramic artist working in stoneware using coil and slab-built methods. Her work leverages traditional clay techniques in small batch runs, highlighting the subtle variations inherent in handmade production. Her textures and forms are enhanced with custom-formulated stains and glazes, and are fired using both oxidation and pit-firing methods.   Aileen earned an undergraduate degree in science from McGill University and pursued graduate studies in architecture at Boston Architectural Center. Though largely self-taught, her techniques have been augmented with coursework in fine art from various art centres and universities across North America. She currently resides on Vancouver Island, with her husband and young daughters.   'Keepsakes' are stoneware vessels inspired by the natural beauty of discarded seashells found along the shores of southern British Columbia. Each piece features an irregular edge created from the coil-built process, a reminder of its handmade origin. - Aileen Vantomme   Join us in warmly welcoming Aileen to The Avenue Gallery! Three Victoria artists present Writ Large - Contemporary Works on Paper

Three Victoria artists draw on their pasts as professional writers and editors to exhibit a collection of large-format works inspired by the emotional and intellectual energy of written language.
Georgina Montgomery, Louise Oborne, and MaryLou Wakefield use words and text as part of their visual language to amplify a compelling idea, question, or life experience personally meaningful to them.
In this series, the artists demonstrate their individual stylistic approaches to interpreting 'Writ Large' and invite viewers to find their own meaning and interpretation in the works.
Writ Large will be on at arc.hive artist run centre October 4 - 19 and open for viewing Saturdays and Sundays from 12 - 4 pm.
An opening reception with the artists in attendance will be on Friday, October 3, from 7 - 9 pm.
For more information about the artists and the exhibition, visit www.writ-large.art
