Curated by Jaimie Isaac, Chief Curator, and Mel Granley, Guest Curator
Fascinations with the mushroom form and functions have shaped creative imaginations and scientific ideas for generations. Symbiosis gathers interdisciplinary contemporary artists located in British Columbia, across Canada and internationally who have produced work that explore forest ecologies and musings about mushrooms. The symbiotic relationships between fungia and boreal realms have co-dependent networks that are essential to the health and vitality of ecosystems. These interconnected relationships have inspired artists and researchers to delve into these micro and macro worlds to consider teachings from the land, medicines, and survival. Scientific and artistic curiosities of the natural world offer inquiries and explorations in Symbiosis.

“Nik West is definitely bringing back the funk groovement and I love everything about what she stands for!” – Bootsy Collins

“Great stage presence… She inspires me in the same way Rosie and Sheila did…” – Prince

Explosive stage presence isn't enough to describe the way Nik West moves, wows, and shocks crowds everywhere. With credits that include work with artists such as Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame, Prince, John Mayer, Glee, and more, bassist/singer/songwriter Nik West is more than just another pretty face. Known for impressively recording a cover of "Back In Black" by AC/DC, Nik shocked many rock fanatics and instantly became a new favorite of legend Steven Tyler and Lenny Kravitz. This left-handed phenom has worked with Grammy-winning songwriter/producer Glen Ballard (Alanis Morissette, George Strait, and Michael Jackson), and since then has toured with Prince, and has accompanied, recorded with, and jammed with a few well-known artists such as John Mayer, Marcus Miller, Macy Gray, Esperanza Spalding, Orianthi, and more. West’s skill was noticed early on by legendary music company, Fender, and she was one of the first musicians to play Fender’s first 6-string bass. She is now the face of a new line of basses called the Dimension Bass and the Elite Bass that Fender came out with in 2017, which she helped develop. She is also the brainchild behind the Queen of Strings Competition, discovering, inspiring, and teaching young women self esteem and discipline on an instrument. Her last performance was at TD JazzFest 2017, and now she returns with her group: Hubie Wang guitar, Amber Sauer vocals, David Cullum drums, and Clifton Williams keyboards.
