Nicole Sleeth - ALL EYES ON YOU
åfortune gallery is proud to present Nicole Sleeth - ALL EYES ON YOU

Nicole’s work centers the female figure as an exploration of power, connection, and lived experience. The works in All Eyes On You are, at their core, about giving agency to the female subject. This body of work confronts and challenges societal constructs including this age old pearl: the passive and decorative object – a.k.a the female nude. In painting history these ‘objects’ are traditionally called models.  In this show, these models have transformed, shedding this label and many of its objective associations. Each model is a confident individual, simultaneously strong and unapologetic. These women intentionally fix their gaze on YOU, the viewer. In turn, you no longer see just a body. You connect directly with a sentient being.
    September 4-29; opening reception, September 12, 7-9pm

    Kimberly Kiel: Mark Making
    The Avenue Gallery, September 19–29
KimberlyKielexpresses herself through a wide variety of subject matter: landscapes andtreescapes; figure pieces andflorals. She loves the creaminess of oil, the opportunity to blend, the fact that it doesn’t dry too quickly. Looking at her work, it’s obvious that colour is a major source of inspiration. She greatly enjoys playing around with the surface on the canvas, getting different layers and textures. 2184 Oak Bay Ave, 250-598-2184,www.theavenuegallery.com.

Following a successful Green New Deal Town Hall in June, Transition Sooke will be hosting a Community Action Workshop to take action on climate change issues raised at the June meeting.
"Sooke region residents are anxious about the impacts of climate disruption on their cherished West Coast environment, on their family's health and on the local economy,"said Susan Clarke, the coordinator of Transition Sooke's Climate Emergency Action Group. "Many members of our community have indicated that taking action reduces their anxiety and sense of powerlessness.  They have also made it abundantly clear, particularly with provincial and federal inaction on climate change, that we need to take local, meaningful action as soon as possible."
The morning will feature several short keynote addresses. We will break at 11-12 to enable participants to attend the Orange Shirt Day commemoration to be held in the centre of Sooke. Lunch will be provided by Transition Sooke. After lunch, we will be breaking into action tables. The action tables will focus on creating teams, hearing from a number of different resource people in the community already working on these issues, and starting to build action plans for the upcoming year. Some of the identified issues that will be discussed include rainwater harvesting, divestment from fossil fuels, local renewable energy options, ecosystem and species protection, local economic models, food security agriculture, and ideas for addressing transportation issues.

I'D HEARD RUMOURS about a new museum of architectural history on Fort Street, but I’d never been inside it until I investigated Wentworth Villa’s fourth-annual music series, curated by artistic director Sarah Fryer. “The museum is still establishing itself,” she explains. The Villa, which in 1863 was one of the first homes built in the young city, has recently appointed a director to help them develop more exhibits highlighting the significant architecture of Victoria and early life of English settlers in the post-Fort-Victoria era.
As soon as the exhaustive and beautiful renovation of the heritage building was completed a few years ago, Wentworth Villa developed a music series to invite the public in to enjoy the space and connect to the meticulously restored property.
Fryer, herself an opera singer, has a long history in the music business, with connections to wonderful performers and artists in various parts of the world. The intimate series of concerts in the charming 108-seat cathedral-ceiling performance space (added in the 1950s), “brings in people who otherwise might not have a chance to perform in Victoria.”
“The acoustics are excellent for chamber music,” she enthuses. “The audience sits quite close, and the chairs are comfortable. Everyone in the room has a good view of what’s going on; people who like to see what a keyboard player is doing can sit behind them and look at their hands.” Pianist Irwin Shung performs on September 8, playing Bach’s Golberg Variations. On September 29, The Vetta Quartet will perform Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 4 in C minor, and selections from Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky. November 2 and 3 the Villa welcomes tenor Isaiah Bell and collaborative pianist Anna Cal, performing Schubert’s powerful, 1828 song cycle. All concerts end with a Q&A session with the artists. In all there are seven concerts in the season, which runs through May 2020.

Wentworth Villa is open to the public every Thursday-Saturday, 11-4, and guide Michael Opalski is delighted to tour visitors through the Villa’s fascinating details and archival collections. “The goal is to slowly build awareness for the museum…[this] comes from the music program, rather than architectural angle; it’s a tough battle to get ourselves more known locally,” he says. After enjoying my tour, I can say the Villa is definitely worth a visit—with or without music.
Wentworth Villa Architecture Heritage Museum is at 1156 Fort St. 7-concert pass is $240 ($150 students), or $40 per concert ($25 students). Call 250-598-0760 or see wentworthvilla.com for more information.
