untilSix albums deep, Juno Award-winning jazz/soul vocalist Kellylee Evans has tackled everything from jazz to R&B and pop in such classics fight or flight?, Nina – her 2011 Juno-winning tribute to the legendary Nina Simone – and I Remember When. Her 2015 album, Come On, is a wonderfully refreshing album that comes on the heels of two nearly career ending accidents, including a freak lightning strike in her Ottawa kitchen. Evans was essentially unknown before becoming a runner-up of the 2004 Thelonious Monk Competition. Now, she offers views on love and loss in an alluringly rhythmic approach that is strictly forged by her jazz discipline. Kellylee Evans last performed in Victoria at TD JazzFest 2013. Experience this stylistic connoisseur live, in her element with Adam Cormier drums, James Meger bass, and Jonny Tobin keys, at Hermann’s Jazz Club on March 22. until“An exciting, exhilarating and original blend that freshens up its sources and takes them somewhere new.” – ALL ABOUT JAZZ England’s Manchester-based GoGo Penguin is a unique piano trio noted for its hypnotic melodies, visceral baselines and tidal rhythms. There’s a wave-like flow to their partially improvised music, which shifts between melodic inventiveness and trance-inducing patterns. Called “music for the heart, head, and feet,” GoGo Penguin were signed to iconic Blue Note Records in 2015 and their newest release, A Humdrum Star, was released to great acclaim in February. From ambient atmospherics to hypnotic beats, GoGo Penguin combines highbrow polish with music-festival populism. Hard to define but easy to groove to, this is one of the freshest bands on today’s scene. Chris Illingworth piano, Nick Blacka bass, Rob Turner drums, Joe Reiser sound
