Alberta goldsmith Bayot Heer considers working with precious metals and gemstones a rare privilege that comes with the responsibility to honour these materials with lasting designs. In this context he is often reminded of the Italian inspired slow food movement – being mindful of earth’s resources we are trusted with. Bayot strives to live up to this excellent quote by Piet Hein; “true design asks one thing of us: to uncover what it covers.” View Bayot's jewellery collection on The Avenue Gallery's website: https://theavenuegallery.com/artists/jewellers/heer-bayot/

The Avenue Gallery introduces Ontario painter, Sheila Davis, featured from February 27 to March 5, 2024. "I paint it as I feel it – not as a physical likeness, but as an entire presence, involving the space of emotion, spirituality, temperature and the senses," explains Sheila. Using traditional oils, she works quickly and vigorously, laying in several layers of transparent colour and value using large dynamic brushstrokes combined with splatter and drip. "These layers are each reworked with opaque brushwork and calligraphy as I attempt to portray what first excited me about the subject, the flash causing the rush of adrenalin and the urge to ‘get it down’ before the feeling dissipates." - Sheila Davis View Sheila Davis' paintings online: https://theavenuegallery.com/artists/

Relentlessly creative, Stephanie Taylor works in large scale oils portraying the ocean, forests, and mountains of British Columbia. Stephanie’s work moves between abstraction and impressionism, incorporating elements of representational detail to convey the fleeting emotive experience in nature, while anchoring the viewer in a specific environment. The light is a common focus in many of her pieces. Paintings are constructed in layers often with vivid underpaintings that infuse the landscape with an elemental glow. Stephanie studied Fine Arts at the University of Victoria. Her work can be found in numerous collections across Canada and abroad. The Avenue Gallery features master artist, Bi Yuan Cheng, from January 18 to 25, 2024. "Although he has the skill and training to paint in any style, Cheng is most passionate about landscapes; his interpretations of West Coast wildness have a powerful verisimilitude, at the same time as his profound early training introduces hints of calligraphy and ink-wash Chinese nature paintings." - Robert Moyes (Boulevard Magazine, October 2013) Image: ‘Sunshine Beach’ by Bi Yuan Cheng - acrylic on canvas, 30 x 40 inches View Bi Yuan Cheng's paintings on The Avenue Gallery's website: https://theavenuegallery.com/artists/painters/bi-yuan-cheng/

Lisa Samphire’s Window Murrini Series is the celebration and culmination of 35 years of training and working with handblown glass. Working in a series allows Lisa to play with form, colour and pattern using a labour intensive process. She loves how the linear pattern informs the shape of the pieces and defines its limits. Balancing process with the aesthetics of the final piece has resulted in bright, cheery and complex works of art. Cindy Revell's imagination and a diploma in Graphic Design led her to illustrate children’s books, magazines, and more, all across North America. Exploration brought her to the fine art she creates today where her creativity spills onto her oil paintings. Flowers, creatures and pattern come together in an exuberant mix to create the vibrant worlds her characters live in. A menagerie of colourful creatures not usually found together converges in her paintings, suggesting the interconnectedness of all things, including flowers who seem to nod to one another in recognition. Having always had a love for creating things - for music, for dance - Kimberly Kiel found one of her greatest passions when she applied paintbrush to canvas for the first time; and finds as much joy in the process as in the end product. Kimberly expresses herself through a wide variety of subject matter; landscapes and treescapes; figure pieces and florals. "For me creating art is a passion, a celebration of the joy and colour to be found in life. I strive to leave much to the imagination, for the viewer to fill in the blanks. To go from a blank, white canvas to one filled with brilliant, glorious colour - there is a huge sense of satisfaction in that.'"– Kimberly Kiel View Kimberly's paintings online: https://theavenuegallery.com/artists/painters/kiel-kimberly/

“Art is a way of life and I create 24 hours a day…maybe not always holding a brush, but by seeing, thinking, and feeling. All my paintings are inspired in some way or another by the environment surrounding me whether it be a specific mountain, waterfall, or an abstract shape. If my heart skips a beat, I take a second look to absorb and analyze. The simplest things capture my attention; the way light bounces off the water and rocks in a stream, the contrast of snow against the warm under brush, creating abstracted forms....it all sparks an emotional cord.” – Linda Wilder View Linda's paintings on The Avenue Gallery's website: https://theavenuegallery.com/artists/painters/wilder-linda/

We are delighted to welcome Vancouver Island woodturner, Peter Hackett, whose sculptural forms echo the strength of the island trees from which they are made. The wood for this new collection comes from a 250-year-old Garry Oak tree from Davie Street, not far from The Avenue Gallery. The owner wanted the spirit of the tree to be preserved by a local artist. “Although heavy, I was able to get a couple of sections from low down in the trunk and quarter saw them to make the vessels. I turned the wood very thin while wet, and as the wood dried it created these beautifully organic oval forms from the perfectly round turnings. Once it dried it revealed a wonderful tactile surface with the growth rings and medullary rays each becoming quite apparent. The larger pieces are quite unique, and I know nothing like them in the world of woodturning.” – Peter Hackett View Peter's new collection on The Avenue Gallery's website: https://theavenuegallery.com/artists/sculptors/hackett-peter/

Inspired by the work of the Inuit and by the work of Henry Moore and Rodin, Vance Theoret found himself drawn to the deceptive simplicity of using the form to suggest detail. “I like to let the stone tell me what it wants to be…when I do this the end product is so much more alive than if I had forced my design upon it! Doing this also allows the stone to work with you and puts colours and patterns in places that you couldn’t plan any better. I carve wildlife, especially bears and owls as I find them a good vehicle for my sense of humour. Although I take my work seriously, I try not to take myself too seriously…so much of my work has a light playfulness about it!” - Vance Theoret View Vance's sculptures on The Avenue Gallery's website: https://theavenuegallery.com/artists/sculptors/theoret-vance/

Eunmi Conacher describes herself as a contemporary impressionist and expressionist artist. ‘My desire is to create paintings which bring energy to the canvas. I use depth of colour to balance realism and abstract. My use of colour, form, and texture is intuitive. My hope is that the viewers connect emotionally with the painting in their own way. The result I strive for is a painting from the heart’. – Eunmi Conacher View Eunmi's full collection of paintings on The Avenue Gallery's website: https://theavenuegallery.com/artists/painters/conacher-eunmi/

“Several different principles of design combine to create a successful landscape painting. For many years, I've wondered what it might be like to remove the subject matter and just create interesting lines, shapes and colours to describe the feeling of a place. As I began these new abstracts, I thought of summer near the water when we often walk along the shoreline and watch the brilliant white sails of boats, against the cerulean sky and deep indigo of the water. So many shades of blue, looking so fresh beside the pure whites. And so my exploration into abstraction began.” - Lorna Dockstader View Lorna's paintings online: https://theavenuegallery.com/artists/painters/dockstader-lorna/ The Avenue Gallery, 2184 Oak Bay Avenue, Victoria BC V8R 1G3

While Pauline Jans began her art practice painting vineyards and landscapes, a longing to express more deeply nudged her artwork from representational to abstract. Pauline's daily practice of hiking rugged landscapes urged her to explore the emotional influence of craggy places and spaces and to release a background of precision. Her abstracts are process-driven, where exploration and discovery lead the way. Pauline's sensitivity to design and balance, coupled with her curiosity and experiencing the raw topography that flanks Okanagan Lake is a lovely juxtaposition to her search for depth and meaning.
