    The Avenue Gallery is proud to announce its upcoming collective exhibition, "Botanical Encounters," showcasing the works of eleven talented painters. Featuring floral artistry in all its glory, "Botanical Encounters" invites viewers to embark on a visual journey through lush landscapes, timeless floral arrangements, and bold interpretations of nature's bounty. The participating artists in this eagerly anticipated exhibition include: Corre Alice, Tanya Bone, Mary-Jean Butler, Eunmi Conacher, Denna Erickson, Becky Holuk, Kimberly Kiel, William Liao, Angela Morgan, Cindy Revell and Jo-Anne Westerby.     Guy Hollington began his career in glass almost by chance; an offhand comment led to an introductory course that morphed into a passion for the blown glass medium. Further study at both the Corning Museum of Glass and the Pilchuk School of Glass provided insight into more of the intricacies of glass blowing and further refinement of his technique. The design on Guy’s stunning vase, ‘Circular Walk’, is created by the layout of hundreds of small pieces of resist which preserve the glass during sandblasting.     Artistic inspiration began at an early age for William Liao. Growing up in Beijing, China after the Cultural Revolution, he was surrounded by classical Chinese culture as well as new European art. These are the influences which continue to define and inspire his work today. With seven years of professional training, he graduated from Beijing Normal University, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts. Specializing in florals, landscapes and figurative works, William’s paintings combine traditional mediums with modern techniques, providing his audience with another dimension of experience. Recognized for his talent, William has won the Art Battle Vancouver, received the Silver Medal at the Signature Medal Show at Federation Gallery, as well as First Place in the Acrylics in Action show.     The Avenue Gallery introduces Ontario painter, Sheila Davis, featured from February 27 to March 5, 2024. "I paint it as I feel it – not as a physical likeness, but as an entire presence, involving the space of emotion, spirituality, temperature and the senses," explains Sheila. Using traditional oils, she works quickly and vigorously, laying in several layers of transparent colour and value using large dynamic brushstrokes combined with splatter and drip.     Relentlessly creative, Stephanie Taylor works in large scale oils portraying the ocean, forests, and mountains of British Columbia. Stephanie’s work moves between abstraction and impressionism, incorporating elements of representational detail to convey the fleeting emotive experience in nature, while anchoring the viewer in a specific environment. The light is a common focus in many of her pieces. Paintings are constructed in layers often with vivid underpaintings that infuse the landscape with an elemental glow.     Lisa Samphire’s Window Murrini Series is the celebration and culmination of 35 years of training and working with handblown glass. Working in a series allows Lisa to play with form, colour and pattern using a labour intensive process. She loves how the linear pattern informs the shape of the pieces and defines its limits. Balancing process with the aesthetics of the final piece has resulted in bright, cheery and complex works of art.     Cindy Revell's imagination and a diploma in Graphic Design led her to illustrate children’s books, magazines, and more, all across North America. Exploration brought her to the fine art she creates today where her creativity spills onto her oil paintings. Flowers, creatures and pattern come together in an exuberant mix to create the vibrant worlds her characters live in. A menagerie of colourful creatures not usually found together converges in her paintings, suggesting the interconnectedness of all things, including flowers who seem to nod to one another in recognition.     Having always had a love for creating things - for music, for dance - Kimberly Kiel found one of her greatest passions when she applied paintbrush to canvas for the first time; and finds as much joy in the process as in the end product. Kimberly expresses herself through a wide variety of subject matter; landscapes and treescapes; figure pieces and florals. "For me creating art is a passion, a celebration of the joy and colour to be found in life. I strive to leave much to the imagination, for the viewer to fill in the blanks.     “Art is a way of life and I create 24 hours a day…maybe not always holding a brush, but by seeing, thinking, and feeling. All my paintings are inspired in some way or another by the environment surrounding me whether it be a specific mountain, waterfall, or an abstract shape. If my heart skips a beat, I take a second look to absorb and analyze.     We are delighted to welcome Vancouver Island woodturner, Peter Hackett, whose sculptural forms echo the strength of the island trees from which they are made. The wood for this new collection comes from a 250-year-old Garry Oak tree from Davie Street, not far from The Avenue Gallery. The owner wanted the spirit of the tree to be preserved by a local artist. “Although heavy, I was able to get a couple of sections from low down in the trunk and quarter saw them to make the vessels. I turned the wood very thin while wet, and as the wood dried it created these beautifully organic oval forms from the perfectly round turnings. Once it dried it revealed a wonderful tactile surface with the growth rings and medullary rays each becoming quite apparent.     Inspired by the work of the Inuit and by the work of Henry Moore and Rodin, Vance Theoret found himself drawn to the deceptive simplicity of using the form to suggest detail. “I like to let the stone tell me what it wants to be…when I do this the end product is so much more alive than if I had forced my design upon it! Doing this also allows the stone to work with you and puts colours and patterns in places that you couldn’t plan any better. I carve wildlife, especially bears and owls as I find them a good vehicle for my sense of humour.
