“A dazzling piece of storytelling” Time Out “A masterwork…A must see.” The Telegraph “You dare not miss it” New York Post On a cold September morning in 1844, Heyam, a young man from Bavaria stands on a New York dockside dreaming of a new life in the new world. He is soon joined by Mendel and Mayer, and the Lehman brothers’ journey begins. The growth of global capitalism exposes the fault lines of the American dream. The Lehman brothers rise from shopkeepers to bankers, from obscurity to prominence, navigating the Civil War, the Great Depression, and generations of ethical dilemmas. It is an epic journey, an epic play, and a theatrical tour de force. The Lehman Trilogy runs April 23 – May 19 at the Belfry Theatre with Pay What You Can tickets available for all performances. “Fabulous interpretations of Joni’s songs and stellar performances!” Patron’s online posting, 2016 Created especially for the Belfry in 2016, this stirring musical is a tribute to one of this country’s most exceptional musical treasures. Using only her words and music—including such iconic songs as Both Sides Now, Big Yellow Taxi, Chelsea Morning, River, and A Case of You—we weave a romantic story of heartache and love. It’s a celebration of the enduring legacy of Joni Mitchell, the poet and the composer, and a testament to her influence on generations of musicians, and a tonic for our times. I Think I’m Fallin’: The Songs of Joni Mitchell runs October 31 – November 26 with Pay What You Can tickets available for all performances. Website: www.belfry.bc.ca

When all the world’s technology ceases to function, it is time to find a new way of surviving—or an old way. Two women—one Indigenous and one white, exiled from their village for being too old to bear children, trudge across the desolate, post-apocalyptic ruin, relying on traditional wisdom for survival. When a charismatic stranger appears, seeking their aid, they must choose whether to use their knowledge of the past to provide hope for the future to the community that branded them “useless.” Yvette was inspired to write The Unplugging after the death of her mother, and the realization that she had not learned enough about her Anishinaabe heritage. A wickedly funny satire about power, procreation, and land claims. Little Red Warrior is the last remaining member of the Little Red Warrior First Nation. One day he discovers the development company of Smith, Smyth and Goldsmithe has begun construction on his ancestral lands. In a fit of rage, he attacks one of their engineers, gets arrested and is assigned to Larry, his court-appointed lawyer. Things turn surprising and farcical—when displaced Red moves in with the lawyer and his wife, Desdemona. And sometimes—when you invite a coyote into the coop—he may just walk off with your chickens. Kevin Loring won the 2009 Governor General’s Award for Drama for his play, Where the Blood Mixes (Belfry 2010). Little Red Warrior & His Lawyer runs from February 1 – 27, 2022 (Live-streaming February 15 - 20) Pay what you want tickets are available at 250-385-6815 or belfry.bc.ca Performance Schedule Tuesdays - Thursdays - 7:30 pm Friday and Saturdays - 8 pm Saturday Matinee - 4 pm Sunday Matinee - 2 pm Belfry Theatre Wednesday Matinees - 1 pm (February 9, 16 & 23)
  9. This season the Belfry is offering Pay What You Want tickets for all performances. “Fresh, funny, thought-provoking, and full of unexpected surprises” - BROADWAY WORLD Actor and playwright Marcia Johnson was inspired to write this play after watching an early episode of “The Crown” on Netflix. “The series was extremely well-made...I have seen every single episode. But, a particular episode, the one set in Kenya, still stands out as flawed to me. The Kenyan perspective was completely ignored.” Marcia Johnson Politics and pop culture collide with unexpected twists as this fascinating play moves between 1952 Kenya—when an anti-monarchist cook challenges Princess Elizabeth in the moments before she becomes queen—and 2015 London—when a Kenyan-Canadian film student clashes with convention and custom while working on a TV series about the Royals. The tension between people and politics—imperialism, representation, and the irresistible draw of the monarchy—infuses and ignites this exciting new play. “Richly detailed with urgent ideas…Serving Elizabeth is a gem.” NOW MAGAZINE, TORONTO From November 23 to December 19, 2021, the Belfry Theatre will be producing Serving Elizabeth by Marcia Johnson. Directed by Nigel Shawn Williams, Serving Elizabeth stars Lucinda Davis, Sia Foryoh, Ryan Hollyman, Amanda Lisman, and Nathan D. Simmons. Serving Elizabeth will also live stream (with live in-person audiences) from December 7 - 12. Ticket Information To make the Belfry even more affordable and accessible, this year we are offering Pay What You Want tickets for both in-person attendance and live streams.
