    https://www.artopenings.ca/katharine-geddes.html In May 2023, Katharine Geddes travelled to Ypres, Belgium to take part in a documentary called Ways We Remember War. She painted on land once ravaged by the First World War - now restored countryside. Geddes followed the pathways forged by Canadian war artist Mary Riter Hamilton, who painted the devastation in 1919. “Now when I paint on site I think about the power of place,” she says. “I imagine both past and future, building a continuum of moments in time.” Katharine Geddes presents Landscape and Memory at Gage Gallery Arts Collective, March 5-24, 2024 Opening is March 8, 5:30-7:30

    http://www.artopenings.ca/fired-up-2023.html Wood-firing in a Tozan anagama kiln is a 4-day marathon, requiring planning and teamwork. In April, members and guests of Fired Up! gathered on Gordon Hutchens’ property on Denman Island. Hutchens describes this wood-firing as one of the best he has experienced in 25 years of operating his anagama kiln. Visitors to the Metchosin show can view this excellence in the quality and variety of ceramics on display: vases, tea pots and bowls, sculptures, dinnerware, containers and other intriguing treasures.

    Kegan McFadden, VAC’s executive director and curator says: “I believe visitors will be impressed by the depth and variety of artwork presented in this survey exhibition.”The View From Here demonstrates how Avis has consistently engaged with her surroundings to make artwork, the curator explains. Rasmussen agrees with the curator, adding she uses a variety of mediums for visual expression: drawing, painting, printmaking and narrative poetry. “My art accompanies me every day of my life,” Avis says, “while I enjoy family, friends, teaching or travelling.”

    In her series called Orbital, Jo-Anne Silverman creates an aura of wonderment. Each of the 24 drawings is an invitation to enter an imaginative world. The twenty paintings still use geometric shapes and architectural mapping to create depth. “But they no longer refer to a specific place,” she says. “They now show elements of urban architecture in a landscape setting.” A significant shift in mediums took place within the evolving artworks. “I found oils to be a fantastic medium to work with when painting plants or landscapes,” she says.
