My whole life I seem to have been aiming for the opposite, keeping my head down and trying not to draw attention. It is a narrative woven through the generations of my family history of migration from China to South Africa to Canada. “In Visible Lines” is informed by these stories of movement and displacement." Artist’s StatementThis piece is a meditation on the cyclicality and the linearity of the passage of time. I believe that the immensity of time can only be understood metaphorically, and it is the twin metaphors of the cycle and the line which I reproduce in this piece using poetry, music, and found reversal film stills. The found images are largely in the mode of amateur travel photography, which captures individual moments from a progression of events, but also often consists of similar images of the same scenery on a predictable annual tourism schedule. I wanted to synthesize all of these elements into a visual/auditory rhythm that would impart a sense of time similar to how my Akan ancestors conceptualized it - with its cyclical and linear aspects in cooperation rather than opposition.•Artist BioJeffrey Ellom is a settler of Ewe, Polish, and Western European ancestry who grew up on unceded Syilx Okanagan territory and has lived on the unceded territories of the Lekwungen speaking peoples since 2014. Through the media of music (released under the name ‘pesewa’), visual art, and video, he works to build upon the artistic legacies of the Ewe people.
