Fortune Gallery is excited to announce "Chimera", a solo exhibition by the gallery's very own Rose Currie. Born and raised on Vancouver Island, Rose has developed an extensive creative portfolio over the past few decades. While her work often incorporates playful elements and humour, many of her pieces cover various aspects of the human condition. Using art as a way to reflect upon aspects of her own lived experiences, Rose's work "encompasses all the grief, love, power, colour, softness, grittiness and fierceness it is to be alive". Through her drawings and paintings, Rose tells personal stories and depicts intimate emotions that many viewers can relate to. "Chimera" Opens November 15th and runs until November 30th. Join us on Thursday November 16th for the opening reception from 6:00pm - 8:00pm, artist in attendance.

The Federation of Canadian Artists Victoria Chapter presents their annual Fall Group Exhibition at Fortune Gallery. What inspires us to connect and capture the world around us? What drives us and what do we hope to communicate through the works we create? Are they a form of self-expression, a social commentary, an impression of a particular event, or created to evoke a mood, to conjure up a feeling? Questions such as these were posed to members of the Victoria Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists, the result of which is this semi-annual exhibition called, “2023 Fall Show”. The show was juried, and the selected art works reveal that the motivations, methods and results are as infinite as the ways we, as human beings, choose to express ourselves. Please come and join the ‘conversation’ during gallery hours … the possibilities are indeed boundless. Join us in celebrating the work of the FCA Victoria Chapter artists at an opening reception: November 4 from 2:00-4:00pm

Artist statement Using surreal compositions of flora and fauna juxtaposed within the abstract, I am interested in nature culture dualisms and other modalities of inquiry into the contradicting notion of nature and how we value place within our current world. In this latest series, Liminal, I have made more personal marks within the work than ever before, delving into the more experiential act of putting paint to canvas and releasing the work from illustrative obligations. The, at times, chaotic physicality of painting brought my body into the pieces, which created a dissolving kind of flow between myself and the painting, placing myself exactly within a liminal moment, just as these paintings are aiming to do. Within this series, birds, in various states of completion or focus are often connected to subtle structural elements which act as a juxtaposition of natural and human made elements pulling at one another, focusing in on the distortion of landscapes, and the moment between presence and disappearance, balancing right on the brink.

Laveen Gammie is currently living and working on lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ land. Laveen works in sculpture installation; presently, with textiles, provisional supports, video, and the photographic image. They continually incorporate new media as different strategies are called for. Laveen's practice investigates cultural symbols, systems and signifiers of consumption, class and identity; uncovering the complexities that maintain their power through a process of reification. This recent work is part of an ongoing series that explores corporatized social interactions (The Meeting, We Meet Again and now, The Meet Up). She's interested in the internal structures that are circumscribed through the privileges of time, money, leisure, and embodied knowledge of rules, etiquettes and the assurance of belonging.
