    Toronto-based pianist and composer Amanda Tosoff has received the Montréal Jazz Festival Grand Prix de Jazz, and the Toronto Arts Foundation Emerging Jazz Artist Award – and most recently, a Juno nomination and mention on the Polaris Prize “Longer List,” for her album Words, which blends poetry, jazz, art-song and folk-pop. With Amanda’s sixth release as a leader, the 2022 Juno-nominated Earth Voices (“Vocal Jazz Album of the Year”), she continues to pursue her creative and stylistic leap. Tosoff stands poised to share with the world the next stages in her evolution. She will be joined by special guest, two-time Juno award-winning jazz vocalist, Emilie-Claire Barlow.     In this session, Dan and Chris Brubeck will focus on rhythm section techniques, emphasizing playing in odd time signatures, and composing. Alongside guitarist and music theorist Mike DeMicco, who teaches at Bard College, and pianist Chuck Lamb, an Adjunct Professor at Skidmore College, attendees will receive special instruction on the art of jazz performance from all four members of the iconic Brubeck Brothers Quartet.

    Sunna Gunnlaugs’ work has received significant critical acclaim since her 2000 release, Mindful, was selected among the top 10 albums of the year by the Washington Post. Her 2010 release The Dream, jumped to number 2 on the Canadian radio charts. Her albums have received extremely positive reviews in leading jazz magazines across the world, and all her albums have been nominated for the Icelandic Music Awards, winning “Performer of the Year” in 2013. Not only is Sunna Gunnlaugs Iceland’s premier jazz pianist, but she’s an internationalist who has spent a lot of time in NYC polishing her craft and deepening her compositional skills. Her latest album, Ancestry, was released in 2018. Gunnlaugs returns to TD JazzFest with her working trio, bassist Thorgrimur Jonsson and drummer Scott McLemore.

    Grammy Award-winning quintet Ranky Tanky performs timeless music born from the Gullah culture of the southeastern Sea Islands. Playful game songs, ecstatic shouts, and heartbreaking spirituals can all be found on their latest release Good Time. Joining them at the 2022 TD JazzFest, and returning to Victoria, will be Ms. Lisa Fischer, who after four decades of featured background singing with icons like Luther Vandross, The Rolling Stones, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner, and Nine Inch Nails, as well as having been featured in the 2013 Best Documentary Oscar winning film “Twenty Feet from Stardom,” she has set out to take center stage.
