“Lage’s incisive musicality and clean fretwork go a long way to bridging aesthetic divides.” – Downbeat

Hailed as one of the most prodigious guitarists of his generation and “highest category of improvising musicians” (New Yorker), Julian Lage has spent more than a decade searching through the myriad strains of American musical history via impeccable technique, free association, and a spirit of infinite possibility. The California-born New York-based musician boasts a prolific resume on his own accord in addition to collaborating with Gary Burton and John Zorn, as well as duo projects with Nels Cline, Chris Eldridge and Fred Hersch, among others. As Lage set out to record his debut for Blue Note Records, the virtuoso guitarist reflected on the label’s storied history and the way his own music connected with it. The result is Squint (released June 2021), a striking new album that weds incisive, expressive songwriting with the profound interplay Lage has honed over the past few years. He returns to Victoria with four-time Grammy-nominated bassist Scott Colley and The Bad Plus drummer Dave King.

“Whether it’s on this big stage or an intimate club, Tirolien’s powerful commanding voice has incredible range, a warm tone, and remarkable control…” – Noisey Vice
Now living in Montreal, Malika Tirolien is a remarkable vocalist, musician, songwriter and producer from Guadeloupe. She is garnering international attention with her creative collaborations, and her latest release Higher is the second in a tetralogy featuring earth, air, fire and water themes. It is a shining example of afro-futuristic styling, and showcases a new genre called “high soul,” mixing R&B, soul, hip hop and jazz. She has toured over 20 countries with her band, Bokanté, and two brilliant albums from the band have already earned them worldwide acclaim and a Grammy nomination. Tirolien’s electrifying performance on “I’m Not The One” (1.9M+ YouTube views) is a prime track on the Grammy-winning album by Snarky Puppy, inspiring countless covers worldwide. Tirolien’s love, passion, and respect for music can be felt in each song, as well as her sparkling authenticity. Nadia Baldé vocals, Nancy Dassas vocals, Jean-Michel Frédéric keyboards, Philippe L’ Allier guitar, Caulder Nash OR Mark Haynes bass, Harvey Bien-Aimée drums

Multi-Grammy award-winning artists Robert “Sput” Searight and Nate Werth take percussion out of the shadows and into the spotlight with Ghost-Note. World renown for their ongoing catalog with international sensation Snarky Puppy, this dynamic duo expands their rhythmical voice into a celebration of music in all its forms. This is music that takes listeners on a mind-blowing journey, inspired by the influences of James Brown, Prince, and J Dilla to name a few. Since forming, Ghost-Note’s sound has evolved to a state that can best be described as ‘conscious funk’ – an elaborate and sonically powerful surge of the tremendous talents that each of the players provides, with the bandleaders leaning back and letting the band go. The core lineup is a rotating cast of heavy hitters, (including former Prince bassist, Dywane “MonoNeon” Thomas) – all stretching to meet the expanding nature of the band. Ghost-Note’s bold and in-your-face performances create seductive danceable grooves and a contagious, feel-good energy, as each show offers a chance to let loose and connect for both fans and the musicians alike.
One half of the LA duo KNOWER and collaborator with Thundercat, Vulfpeck, and Snarky Puppy, future-sonic-funk drummer and keyboardist Louis Cole is a singer-songwriter and Grammy-winning producer known today as one of the world’s most celebrated musicians. Cole’s sound is a seemingly simple and totally addictive mix of electro-funk missiles shot clearly on refrains and steamy nostalgic strolls.
With a mission “to create deep feelings through music” his comedic YouTube videos aren’t far from the real thing. Viral video favourites like “F It Up” mirror his live big band show experience, featuring LA’s best instrumentalists seen creating hot funk whilst crammed into his modest living room. Louis Cole’s 12-member Big Band follows in similar fashion: weird, wild, and wonderful. This will be a night to remember. Rai Thistlethwayte keyboards, Petter Olofsson bass, Shai Golan saxophone, Doug Mosher saxophone, Henry Solomon saxophone, Zach Ramacier trumpet, Rob Sheppard flute, Vikram Devasthali trombone, Jon Hatamiya trombone, Genevieve Artadi bvox, Isis Giraldo bvox
