    Toronto-based French/American jazz singer Laura Anglade is making a name for herself on the Canadian jazz scene and beyond. Anglade’s singing is reminiscent of many of the great vocal stylists of the 20th century: Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, Anita O’Day, Shirley Horn, and Blossom Dearie. She has made several appearances on the New York, Toronto, Québec City and Montreal scenes and has performed at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal over the past three years. Her debut album I've Got Just About Everything, which came out in June 2019 on Justin Time Records, has been met with praise by critics and fans alike, and her new second duo record will be released in May 2022.     Multi award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter, and pianist Laila Biali has headlined festivals and venues spanning five continents from New York City’s Carnegie Hall to Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts, and supported international icon Sting. In 2019, Biali’s eponymous release won her a Juno for “Vocal Jazz Album of the Year.” She received her first Juno nomination for Tracing Light (2011), and a spot on DownBeat Magazine’s “Best Albums of the Year” for Live in Concert (2013) and Out of Dust (2020). In September of 2017, Biali was brought on as the host for CBC Music’s national radio show, Saturday Night Jazz, a weekly show broadcast to listeners across Canada. Biali’s latest album, Out of Dust, which features multiple Grammy nominees and winners including Lisa Fischer, Alan Ferber, John Ellis, and Larnell Lewis, released March 27, 2020 and was also nominated for a 2021 Juno award. She now tours with her band, drummer Ben Wittman and bassist Ken Lister.

    Singer, composer, percussionist, and band leader Marta Elena belongs to a younger generation of Cuban musicians who are happy to honour the island nation’s Afro-Latin musical roots, while looking for new ways to express the music that courses through the veins of the country. While in Cuba, she performed with the famous Cuban female band Anacaona and toured extensively with Caribbe Girl female band. After so many years of performing with different bands in Cuba and worldwide, Marta Elena immigrated to Toronto in 2011, and started performing in the Canadian scene at various local venues and Canadian festivals. Marta Elena has created an extensive library of original compositions that can be heard on Marta’s new album, De la Habana a Toronto, which showcases Cuba’s bright traditional blasts; Guaracha, Cha-Cha-Cha, Cumbia, Rumba and Salsa in an eclectic selection of danceable and delicious rhythms, in a unique and intoxicating style to break all the rules.

On Sunday, June 26, featured bands include: Wellington High Senior Jazz Combos, Wes Carroll Quintet, Kelby MacNayr Quintet, and Streetbeat.

    Still Standing: Ancient Forest Futures brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists to reflect on our relationship with old-growth forests in B.C. from a range of cultural and philosophical perspectives. The exhibition explores the relationships between art, ecology and activism in order to envision futures which honour reciprocal relationships with nature.

    Audrey Ochoa is one of Edmonton’s most prolific trombone players. Her debut album, Trombone and Other Delights (2014), was widely acclaimed and spent three consecutive weeks as the number one Jazz album on the Earshot charts. Ochoa’s sophomore release, Afterthought (2017), rose to No. 1 on the Canadian jazz charts and broke the top 20 in the U.S. A rising star in her own right and a fixture of the Canadian music scene, she is decidedly captivating and original, and her most recent album Frankenhorn saw Ochoa win a Western Canadian Music Award.     The title of eight-time Grammy winner Buddy Guy‘s 2018 album says it all: The Blues Is Alive and Well. The legendary blues artist’s eighteenth solo LP and follow-up to 2015’s Born to Play Guitar received a 2019 Grammy Award for “Best Traditional Blues Album.” It showcases his raw and unadulterated sound and arrives on the heels of a spate of high visibility for the 83-year-old performer: at the 2016 Grammys, he picked up a trophy for “Best Blues Album” honouring Born to Play Guitar. A truly restless and energetic performer, it’s clear that the music—and Guy himself—aren’t going away anytime soon, and you can catch Buddy Guy and his band live at TD Victoria International JazzFest in 2022.
