Ellen Neel: the First Woman Totem Pole Carver
Legacy Art Gallery Downtown,
She defied gender barriers and federal law to become an acknowledged leader in the male-dominated world of totem carving. Now, UVic’s Legacy Art Gallery honours the artistic legacy of Ellen Neel with the first public exhibition of her work in over five decades. A prolific artist, Neel was only 49 when she died in 1966. This exhibition honours her life, work and the artistic legacies that live on in the work of her children (like David Neel’s shown here), grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Wed-Sat, 10am-4pm, 250-721-8298, 630 Yates St, www.uvac.uvic.ca.
